DETECTIVES TELL OF METHODS USED BY AUTOJHIEVES No Lock Too Strong for Expert Thieves, Say City Sleuths. During the first fifty-eight days of 1923 10S automobiles were stolen in Indianapolis. During the same time 100 cars were recovered. Ninety per cent of the automobiles stolen are taken by “joy riders,” who desert the cars when the gasoline runs low. Often the cars are badly damaged by “borrowers" who fail to keep sufficient oil in the motor or wreck the car by careless driving. Ninety-nine per cent of the “joy riders” are under 25. Many are only 15 or 16 years old. Often they are members of well-to-do and influential families who can obtain the services of clever attorneys. The Mg problem of the detective department is the other 10 per cent — the real automobile thieves. These men often are members of gangs of bank robbers, burglars, yeggmen and automobile accessory theft gangs. The latter type often strips stolen cars and deserts them on country roads after taking tires, lights and even motors. Carelessness of motorists makes thefts possible. Lieut.. Michael Hynes of the police uutomobije squad points cut. For example, leaving the key j in the lock “just for a minute” while stopping at a store. Some drivers foolishly think removing the distributor block from the carburetor will prevent theft. Hardly a “good" automobile thief is arrested hut detectives find distributor blocks in his pockets. There is a master key for Ford ignition and it is not difficult tc make one from any Ford key. Ford owners often leave the wheel-lock key and take the ignition key, thinking this wilj prevent theft. But auto thieves find this easy. Fven the locked wheel is not thief proof. The wheels are sometimes removed from the car and a regular steering wheel installed. The type of lock that encircles the rim and wheel is cut off by expert thieves or the lock picked with little difficulty.
