KOOSIER WOMAN * TREASURES OWN OF WASHINGTON Prized Reiic Used to Bake Bread in Revolutionary Campaign. A genuine relic cf the life of George Washington, one of the few to be found in this part of the country, Is the little Butch oven belonging to Mrs. Rufus Hast. W. Sixth St., Bloomington, according to the Indiana A’umniiS. During a revolutionary campaign in Virginia, the tread which ] fed the great general and his troops was bak and in this oven. Washington's army, according to the story handed down to Mrs. East j from several generations of ancestors, . encamped near the F.rewster home in Jasmin County, Virginia. All the, men of the fondly were away fighting for the colonies, but the three Brewster sisters volunteered to bake bread ■ for the army. Klght and day during j the entire encampment the oven was ! kept going, never once being allowed j to cool. The Washington oven has been handed down to the descendants of the Brewsters from tint time to the name of Jane or Jar.et shall always deceive the relic. Mrs. Janet Brews- i Irvin, on of the early settlers of Kentu* w ". took it with her from the old home Virginia. Kn route to i Kentucky the orv with some of the other furniture, had - s- he buried becausa of Indian hostilities. Tlte three Brewster sis- ‘ ters and Mrs. Seward are buried In "God’s Half Acre.” on the Indiana University campus, just south of Jordan field. Although the exact age of the oven j Is unknown, it is said to have been brought to Virginia from Scotland many years before the Revolutionary War. Characteristic of such early heaters, it Is of very heavy iron, durable and crude looking, compared to modern stoves.
