AMENDED MW 1 TAX MEASURE IS PASSEDIN HOUSE Principal Feature of Bill Is Stricken Out Before Successful Vote. With the principal feature taken from the hill by amendment, the administration tax measure passed the House today, 69-10, and will go to the Senate for consideration. As the bill now stands, it is .ittle more than a clarification of the present law. The portion of the hill stricken out provided that the tax board might increase valuations of property within townships instead of within counties as a whole as at present. This was recommended by Governor McCray. It is understood the vital part of the bill was removed on agreement that the other sections would be pjLssed. The bill failed Thursday afternoon for want of a constitutional majority, 49-42. Consideration of the bill Thursday was marked by parliamentary difficulties. It was called down by the Republicans and, after the vote was taken, they found insufficient members to pass the measure were present. The absentees were sought without success. Then Oscar A. Ahlgren, Republican floor leader, moved the House recess fifteen minutes until the absentees were called. The vote was put over the protest of the Democrats. After more quibbling Ahlgren demanded the result of the vote for a recess be announced; “I can't announce it now, “Speaker Morgan said, taking an apple from his desk and beginning deliberately to peel it. “I have got to eat this apple first. It Is going to take me just fifteen minutes.” He proceeded to eat. Republicans, realizing the speaker was attempting to forestall more parliamentary tangles, bought more apples at a stand in the corridor and presented them to the speaker. After fifteen minutes of eating during which the absentees were not found Morgan announced the vote on the hill: Moiisrsir TRAFFICCAPTAIN Long lines of automobile drivers today formed at police headquarters in the second corridor, waiting to interview Capt. Michael Gleen and assistant traffic officers. It was the day after the new city traffic ordinance went into effect. Most of the drivers, forgetting that the new ordinance required them to park their cars flat to the curb, parked at an angle. About 1,000 of them found stickers on the windshields ordering them to visit Captain Glenn’s office. There was a general demand for copies of the new ordinance, but these were lacking. Her Dream Realized - MRS. JACK HOUK 19*9 TENNESSEE ST.. LAWRENCE. HAS. JT VERY young woman like Mrs. Houk before her marriage A—' dreams dreams and has visions of her ideal home with her husband, and healthy, happy children to make her joy complete. But as time goes on her dreams are not realized, she has no children, her life is embittered and it is hard for her to be reconciled to the conditions as they exist. To every young woman who is in this condition the following letter should bring hope and encouragement, as we know of numberless homes that have been blessed with children, just as this home was, after all hope had been abandoned. Here Follows Mrs. Houk’s Personal Letter: “I was of a nervous disposition and always had a tired, worn-out feeling. I would get sharp pains in my side when working too hard or when walking too much and sometimes I would have those awful dragged down feelings. I have had such troubles since I was a very young girl and had got very little result from all the medicine 1 had taken, and one doctor told me that I would never have children unless 1 had an operation. I had heard a great deal about Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound so I thought I would try it. By the time I had finished the fourth bottle I noticed a change in my health. We took a trip to California at this time and I kept on with the medicine. My health continued to improve and I now have a big, healthy baby boy six months old. I am not doing my own housework yet as I want to get good and strong first as it means a lot to inv baby for me to be well while be is nursing. I have spoken highly of the Vegetable Compound to my friends, and I am more than willing for you to use these facts as a testimonial.” —Mrs. Jack Houk, 1315 Tennessee St., Lawrence, Kansas.
