STREET PROGRAM PLANNED PENDING ASSEMBLY ACTION Elliott Works on Development of Major Thoroughfares, Pending passage of two bills before! the Legislature, preliminary plans for j developing major thoroughfares for j Indianapolis and resurfacing several j streets are being worked out, John L. 1 Elliott, city engnieer, said today. One bill authorizes the city to develop a major thoroughfare plan, setting aside a 3-eent tax levy for the work after 1923. Another gives the ••ity authority to establish building lines to aid the street widening program. The three major projects to be accomplished this year will be development of New York St. and elimination . of Jogs at Delaware and Sixteenth j Sts., and at College and Massachusetts Aves. Other projects to be taken up this J year will be to widen and open Six- | teenth, Twenty-Fifth and Thirtieth j Sts.; widen X. Meridian St., between i St. Clair St. and Fall Creek; widen S. Meridian St. south of McCarty St.; widen Prospect St. west of Virginia Ave., and widen Morris St. Although the work is not planned for the near future, resurfacing of many streets is planned by the engineering department. Elliott said, under the new resurfacing bill. Chief among these is the resurfacing of Tillnois St., between the Union Station j and Sixteenth St. STEP-SON DENIES HE OUSTEDJANTZ Albers Objects to Statement in Criminal Court, William farmer, living three j miles south of T clianapolis, today j denied a statement _ his step-father, j Paul Jantz, in Criminal Court that j Albers had driven Jantz from his j heme. Jantz was fined f 3,000 and sentenced j to two to twenty-one years at the | Indiana State Prison by Judge Collons 1 when he admitted burning the house ui which his wife and step-son lived. Jantz pleaded guilty to arson. Albers said Jantz was angry because a deal by which he tried to get possession of the bouse, did not succeed. LOCAL MAN HELD AS WINCHESTER RO3BER Defectives Recover Goods Stolen From Clothing Store. Charged with being one of two men who robbed the clothing store of W. E. Miller, Winchester, Ind., Tuesday night, Walter Coiner, 30, of 229 H Indiana Ave.. was held here today on charges of vagrancy and being a fugitive from justice. J. M. Fletcher, special detective at Winchester, was expected to come after him. Cotner was arrested Wednesday night by Detectives Stump and Samuels. who said they recovered from him three suits of clothes and two pairs of shoes stolen at Winchester. The .detectives sai 1 Cotner told them that a negro, his alleg*?d accomplice, and a stolen overcoat were in Muncie. ONE FIREMAN INJURED IN $400,000 BLAZE New Orleans Office Building Is Destroyed. By Unit'd Press NEW ORLEANS, March I.—One fireman was believed fatally Injured and damage estimated at $400,000 was caused by a fire which destroyed an effice building here early today. The fireman, Capt. Fred Smith, was injured when a wall of the building collapsed. RAIL DECISION IS BENEFIT TO EMPLOYES 'lore Than 31,000 Clerks and 65,000 Freight Workers Gain. Hu United Press CHICAGO, March 1. —More than 31.000 clerks on Class 1 railroads were benefited by the decision of the railroad labor board establishing an eighthour day and time and a half overtime for this class of work, effective today. Shortly after the store j closed it was discovered nine fur j chokers had been taken. One of the j pieces was dropped In the elevator.
