Jazz Makes a Dr. Jekyll and a Mr. Hyde Out of Ted Lewis
JAZZ MUSIC transforms Ted Lewis into a Dr. Jekyll and a Mr. Hyde. ) Ted himself admits this in song while his own orchestra Is crooning the blues as only the Lewis organization can do it. The more Ted Lewis raves, the better one likes him in the current edi-
tion of The Greenwich Village Follies at the Murat. Ijewis throws his old silk hat in the air, shakes his shoulders, prances across the stag*while he directs his musical assistants. I frequent ly have exploded in admiring terms in this department over the way certain jazz bands have played "Three O’clock In the Morning.” I am not going to rave all

over again but simply state, while I am in my right mind, that of the many jazz organizations playing this classic of jazz, Ted Lewis and his orchestra play It the best. Lewis also makes a classic, a regular dramatic symphony, out of a tune called "Fate.” There will be those who contend that Lewis and his orchestra are 99 per cent of the Greenwich Village Follies. The fact remains that the crowded theater (not a vacant seat or any available legal standing room was went “mad” over Lewis. yThe audience yelled, screamed and cheered. Never have I heard such a riot in my years of covering the

theater in this city. Lewis registered a big triumph last night. It Is Individual jazz played In the tempo of complete abandonment. Ted Lewis frolics up a jazz number to such an extent that jazz music In his hands becomes Tiffany in class. A New Real Comedian Has Arrived on Stage Meet Joe E. Brown. If this man keeps on as he is registering in the Follies, his name is going to be a household word. He is individual. He knows how to clown and better than that, he is a SUN DIAL FOR GRENFELL nos pit al in Newfoundland Wilds Will Get Needed Gift. finished artist in burlesque on the dance. He probably Is at his best in a bit of nonsense called "Arrest Me." His partner in “crime” is Sammy White. Their first song number, “Miss White and Mr. Brown” is a clever bit of work. Brown has an eccentric dance number near the close of the first act -which halts proceedings. This man has the ability, the personality and everything needed to make him a leading comedian. Eva Puck and Sammy White engage in some smart patter and a good burlesque on opera and classical dancing. Miss Puck asks White, “Are you English?” White answers, “No, I don’t owe the United States a penny.” There are numerous beautiful song

pictures such as “When Dreams Come True;” “Snowflake” with its stunning ballet and “A Young Man’s Fancy” (A masterpiece of beauty). Among the dancers are Theo. Zambounls, Kathleen O’Hanlon, Valodia Vestoff, Mollie Dod and others. They Even Dance Up in the Air In the Follies All the dancing is not confined to the stage in this show, because Bird Millman, the "Pavlowa of the tlghtwires,” is present with her magic feet. She dances, she waltzes, she struts and sways in perfect time with the orchestra while on the wire. She is the best of her typt* of work before the American people today. I must not forget Marie Holly, a

singer, who has much to do In this show, and she does it highly successful. The closing scenes of this revue demonstrate the artistry of John Murray Anderson, who staged tho show. He is a wizard in obtaining marvelous effects with two cold's —black and white. Some of the comedy is rapid, a trifle fast, but generally within the spicy bounds of reason. The show moves rapidiy after a mighty poor start. After the introduction the show goes into high and glides along at a merry and a fast pace. The Shriners last night gave a George Washington birthday party. I believe it was their most successful party. After the show there was dancing and between acts there were stunts and a short talk.
