He met Vincent Richards in an indoor match and, though he was defeated, he demonstrated that he's the same old skilful Bill. Reports indicate Tilden showed everything he has ever dashed on a court. Samuel Hardy, one of the best tennis authorities in the country, watched Tilden all through the recent tournament at Buffalo and saw him yesterday and he expressed the opinion that Tilden was just as good as ever. Since the operation seems not to have injured Tilden’s game, it means much to American tennis. With a handicapped or less efficient Tilden, the United States would have a battle to retain the Davis cup this summer, and without him at all it would be almost impossible If some veteran team like the Australians came through to the challenge round. -I- -1- -IRichmond handed the Bedford High School basket-ball five a neat trimming Saturday night. Bush Has Big Task Ahead to Pull Washington Team Up In Ijace

MANAGER OWNIE POPULAR AT NEW SCENE OF ACTION Fans and Players Like New Leader, but Senator Job Is ‘Jonah,’ By Times Special WASHINGTON, Feb. 19.—Ownie Bush, undoubtedly one of the most popular of the many men sent out of Indiana to the big leagues, is counted on to put pep into a Washington outfit which frolicked and slept into sixth place last year in the American League. Ownie, known now throughout big league baseball as “Donie,” is to bo manager of the Washington outfit. Ownie to Leave Ownie Bush, manager of the Washington Americans, will leave Indianapolis next Saturday on the first leg of his managerial career. Bush will go to Washington for three days and pilot the Washington batterymen out of there Feb. 27. He will take eleven pitchers and four catchers to Tampa, Fla., to start the spring training grind. The other Washington players will not report at Tampa until March 8. Pitcher Mogridge, one of the Washington mainstays, is a holdout, but Manager Bush believes the star will sign later. His appointment came as one sprprise of the hot stove season because the understanding was that Bush had demanded a transfer to other climes. Clark Griffith, president of the club, thought otherwise and Bush turned up as manager. Popular Player From the very first, Bush has been as popular In Washington as he was In Detroit and Indianapolis. He was popular In bygone days because he was a fighter and because he was one of the greatest of the shortstops Everett Scott of Bluffton, Ind., Is still rated as one of the best, but the statistics will show that Bush covered more ground and handled more chances than any others of his day or of this day. When Ty Cobb got rid of Ownie at Detroit, most fans thought he was through and had slipped beyond recall. The facts were that New York and Chicago both wanted Bush at the time, the managers knowing he was still good. But Bush was caught under the waiver system and had to go to Washington. Bush has a ragged outfit to begin with, one which two other managers, George Mcßride and Clyde Milan, failed to do much with. The team seems to take its habits from Congress and likes to sleep. The spirit was jnissing last year. KINSEY BROTHERS WIN NET DOUBLES TOURNEY Flashy t oast Pair Wins Easy Doubles Match. By l itres Special SAN FRANCISCO. Cal.., Feb. 19. The Kinsey brothers.
