A. Robertson at the East Park H. E. By a •areful reading of the Gospel, we see that this in not true. The fact that our Lord had a habit of etealng away to be by Himself. Instead ~f living a hurried, fast-moving life, He lived a leisurely life. It was impossible to hurry Him. “If we would understand the New Testament we must learn that there :0 a gospel of leisure, which needs :o be preached as earnestly as the gospel of work. It was because Jesus had been by Himself with God so much that He was able to have such marvelous poise and could endure ternoests, questionings and criticisms “The great majority of the people . f o*ir country are afflicted with ape mliar disease known as Americanitis. \ feverish, hasty, hustling ‘lets go’ jpirit. It has completely taken posicssion of the church. Hence the prevailing question is ‘Why doesn't the •hurch do this.’ or ‘What is the hurch doing.' as though wp arc doing nothing. This may he called ecciestasticus Americanitis. a sort of insanity a craziness that lays all the emphasis upon doing and takes no account of the absolute necessity of every soul building Itself up partly in solitude. Labor'is Entitled to Shorter Hours “One of the great problems of the industrial world is how to shorten the hours of labor. The world's tollers have a perfect right to demand a wider margin to the page of their life. Got never intended that those who labor by the sweat of their brow should be ®omp"Ued by an arbitrary dictum of his fellowman to work twelve hours a day. It is a cruelty and blasphemy and must be abolished. “One reason that the American home is going to pieces is because The parents have no leisure. A twelve-hour day of mechanical orudgery is enough to take out of any man or woman the spirit of God and reduce him to an animal. “Our wage earners must have more hisure to develop their minds, cultivate their hearts and to conserve their physical energy." The best comedy scenes are those ; dealing with the schoolmaster teachj ing the young people to sing and the meeting of Ichabod with the “headless” horseman. At times the action is slow, but Rogers can be relied upon to lift the picture to a high comedy level. Children and grownups will enjoy this one. On the bill at the Apollo this wAek is anew Buster Keaton movie, “The Frozen North.” It is an highly improbable dream of Keaton. At times it gets laughs, but the situations are so impossible. Soothing jazz music is being offered hy Virgil Moore’s musicians. Lester Huff again makes the pipe organ talk. , -I- -I- IGriffith Gets the Jazz Fever In “Exciting Night" .Movie Jazz applies not only to music, but to the movies as well. I was sure of that .after seeing D. W. Griffith's latest, “One Exciting Night,” at the Circle. This movie reminds one of “The "Bat.” Griffith has taken plain melodrama and has applied every

known trick of the trade to it. It also , proves that It is more difficult to put a mystery melodrama on the screen than on the stage. A love story, a couple of murders, hidden money, bootleggers and about everything else Is mixed up in tills melodramatic mess. “One Ex ilting Night” is ordinary meloIrama played in a Jazz key. No

chance Is given the actors for DEMPSTER characterizations with the exception of the two comedy roles. When "The Bat” was produced on the stage, the newspapers were asked not to tell the story. The same is asked of the Griffith movie. Again I how to the request. This movie Is thrilling. Furniture and doors move by unseen hands. A masked man in a long black cloak murders and scares every one nearly to death, both in the movie and in the audience. Griffith has conspired to shock every one out of their wits. He has succeeded. There is no doubt as to that. * He actually makes one fear to go home in the dark. It is a trick movie and Griffith has used every trick in the business. A story’, ft terrific man made storm, is used to increase the thrills. orchestra serves musical moans and screams. It sure is exciting at the Circle these days. After Griffith fools and frightens you nearly to death, he then shows you how it has been done. Carol Dempster and Henry Hull are the levers who attempt to love while the thrills are being dished out. Porter Strong and Irma HftrMson have the comedy roles. At the [ Ohio all week. -I- I- I- | Best of Series On View at Isis The best of the “Leather Pushers" series of pictures, from a standpoint of comedy, to be shown so far, is on view at the Isis for the first half of the week. In “Round Nine,” as this picture is known, the “Battling Kid” Is a sideshow attraction with a circus. While playing in a small town in the West, a wealthy rancher, who is a regular Hercules in appearance, accepts the challenge of the champion. His lumbering awkwardness and the clever way the “Kid” tyvades him make the picture interesting as well as funny. The westerner, noplussed by his first defeat, follows the champion around the country, eagerly awaiting an opportunity to fight with his bare fists. He gets his chance and is so overwhelmingly defeated that he is glad to give up and go back home. The program includes Harry Carey in "Good Men and True.” a western picture, in which a cowboy is a candidate for the office of sheriff. The story is based on the campaign conducted hy the cowboy. It has all the ossonse of a regular "hot” election. Os course the vice crowd, known as the liberal element, cause all the trouble. The cowboy wins and the occasion is celebrated with pomp and pageantry, which ends with the cowboy being married. RABBI WISE RISES 10 SUPPORT OF DR. PERCY GRANT Jewish Leader Assails Episcopalian Bishop Pastor Again Denies Christ, By United Press NEW YORK, Feb. 12.—The con troversy between Dr. Percy Stickney Grant and Bishop William T. Manning, was regarded today by church leaders as having been re-opened as the result of denial by Dr. Grant from the pulpit yesterday that Christ was of virgin birth. “I get letters saying ‘you are undermining Christianity,’ ” said Grant. What I Have Learned in 47 Years Practice
