EXPERT ANALYZES IN VARIOUS LINES Railroad Men Fear Lower Prices Will Cut Down Mine Production, By JOSEPH WILD, United Press Correspondent CHICAGO, Feb. 12. —Western railroad men outline immense traffic until May. The Chicago % group of railroad traffic men hardly looks beyond May because of a fear that the coal traffic may drop seriously. Movement of coal on many roads form a heavy percentage of the gross tonnge, in some cases risng to 50 per cent during the winter months. Railroad men are afraid of lower coal prices that will cut mine production. Spring and summer coal, will, of course, be mined at top cost and the mines may refuse to pile up stocks until they sense the business situation against the winter. Despite various warnings of runaway markets in steel, wool, etc., 25 per cent of general merchandise remains at a low price as compared with wage averages. Railroads can no longer cover up their aggregate liberal net earnings and continue as a pillar of this extraordinary situation. The midwest has renewed Its faith concerning a reasonable spring rise in securities. The western public continues to regard the Ruhr affair with non-chal-ance that astonishes economists. Further aggressive announcements by steel leaders of a necessary price advance are received without remonstrance. Corn continues its advance toward the expected 85 cents per bushel. Com Drain on U. S. The world apparently will require 220,000,000 bushels of corn from Argentina and the United States in the next year, and Argentine old corn reserves are about exhausted. The indicated demand on the United States for 100,000,000 bushels of corn will about drain our supplies. Large hog supplies hold the Chicago hog down to the 8-cent average. The cattle market has answered to (he liberal number of rattle on feed Early in September prime steers averaged near 11 1 i cents. This was followed by a rise to around 13',* cents in November and December, whereas the current average is 10% cents. Western lambs hold well with a range of 12% to 15% cents. World export wheat supplies are large, but the trade Is awakening to the vigorous influences of the further rise in business. Gains of $2 to $1 per ton in steel products and 20 per cent in wool, etc,, do not mean $1 wheat, and wheat prices should hold. Among various conventions held In Chicago during the past week, the building supply men outline five years more of high rents and the lumbermen are confident of 102.1 as a year that will unfold quadruple aggregate profits when compared with former days.

The Active Coal Company, yards at Fourteenth St. and Senate Ave., is installing a battery of eight circular elevated tanks, reinforced with steel, making the plant fireproof and providing a storage capacity of 4,000 tons. “The trolley carrier, electrically operated, is a labor saving equipment of proven merit,” says W. M. Bosley, secretary of the company. "A regulation coal car with hopper bottom Is spotted beside the coaling

Reports from all parts of the country Indicate substantial improvement in business over 1922. Eighty-five per cent of the 1922 crop of hops in Oregon is already sold, and the price is on a rising market. Last year’s crop is reported as two-thirds normal. To handle pasteurization of malts, Walters said the Malt Ade Company has installed equipment necessary for the complete process. This Improvement enables the consumer to keep malt indefinitely.

pit and dumped. Through a quadrant undercut gate the coal is withdrawn into the bucket (two-ton capacity) hoisted to a position beneath the cable and carried to the disposal point. Fifty tons of coal can be handled an hour. “The steady natural growth of Indianapolis has materially increased the consumption of coal. The field is a big one. We are pleased over possibilities.”
ME PAPES AS BUSINESS AUGUR Good Prices Are Being Paid for Old Stock, General trend of business conditions is reflected in the purchase and sale of waste paper, according to Howard M. Muller of the American Paper Stock Company, 337 W. Market St. Ho reasons: “There Is no business that does not use paper In some form or other. This paper eventually Is thrown away and Is sold as waste. As business conditions Improve more paper is used. “As the market price rises more paper is offered to us. “The paper market has been very uncertain. but in the past month has reached a basis and maintained a fair average. At present we are paying a good price for stock offered us. "Many Individuals and business bouses have found a profitable source of revenue from the sale of old ledgers, records, flies and waste paper, especially during the spring clean-up period. Tills waste is called for by us. “The outlook for a banner year seems certain.” HAULING HEAVY GOODS IS MADE SPECIALTY O’Donnell Company Employs Riggers to Handle Safes. The ODonneJl Transfer Company, says T. R. O’Donnell, president, makes dally overland hauling trips by truck between Richmond and Indianapolis. "We specialize In moving heavy machinery' and safes,” bo adds. "Riggers take care of this part of our trucking. It’s a big Job to load a piece of machinery and have it delivered at Its destination with all parts in true relation and good running order. “Our business has made a fine growth since we have been established In Indianapolis.”

BRIGHT LINING TO TRADE DESPITE BE FAILURES Economist Analyzes Figures and Sees Approach of Normal Conditions, By United Financial BY DR. LEWIS J. HANEY Director, Bureau Business Research, New York University NEW YORK, Feb. 12.—1 t has been widely announced that the number of business failures in January was very great and this is bad sign. Study of the facts shows figures do not lead to pesslsmistic conclusions. Each year failures increase in December and reach a seasonal minimum in January. These are the months in which business troubles generally come to a head. More than this, the number of business firms constantly is Increasing and naturally the total number of failures will constantly Increase even though the percentage of failures remains constant. 2,120 Failures In Month In January this year there were .1,126 failures. It has been noted this }s the first time failures have crossed the 2,000 mark since last AprlL I have estimated the normal number of failures in January would have Leon 1,722, which figure allows for the normal increase In total number of firms and the usual swelling of the failure crop In January. Thus, the excess over the normal number for January was only' 404. The point to be emphasized is this: The small excess over the normal numl>er. With the exception of last Dei cember It Is the smallest excess of ' failures over normal since September, 1921. Tims the number of business failures. which Is a valuable Index of business conditions, really shows Improvement. It Indicates we are steadily approaching normal business conditions. Pig Iron Increase Another index is pig Iron productions. This generally Increases or de- ; creases as conditions improve or grow worse. In the month Just past, pig iron production was double that of January, 1922, Other contributions to the bright side of the plctifre are the turn for the better In railway operation, arrangement for settling England’s debt to us, and the firmness of the general i price level. The showing made by the western carriers has been particularly encouraging. Car loadings have broken seasonal records. Earnings statements show roads have recovered from effects of the shopmen's strike and give ground for hoping that this year they ; can pay a fair Yetum on invested capital. which will be a good thing for everybody. Fringed Parasols Fringed parasols are a novelty this season. The fringe may be heavy silk or may be wooden or glass beads. Sometimes a design is worked out on the fringe and the rest of the parasol is kept quite subdued.
