COAL PURCHASED ON INSTALLMENT PLANNEW IDEA Dollar and Half Down and $1,50 Per Month Is Scheme, BY EDWARD THIERRY \EA Service Staff Writer PORT WASHINGTON, L. 1., Feb. 9.—A dollar and a half down and a dollar and a half a month for ten months buys your coal, per ton, on the installment plan—ls you live In Port Washington. Wall Street Makes Ready Real Clean-Up on Stock
Bv C. C. LYON WASHINGTON, Feb. 9.—On the assumption there will be no special session of Congress after the adjournment on March 4, Wall Street interests are getting ready for a big clean-up on stocks, particularly railroads stocks. A Wall Street house, writing Its customers, says: “We have Information from highest sources there will be no special session. With this danger removed, railroad stocks are cer-
coal committee. "I think it will help to solve our annual coal problem. It means we get cheaper coal—and certain coal. “The whole trouble has been that most people won’t buy It in the spring and summer when It is plentiful and cheap, but persist In buying In the winter when it is dear and hard to get. Perhaps because we live in a hand-to-mouth age of living, and not every one finds it convenient to buy a whole winter’s supply at once. “We solved that by getting a bank to carry our notes. We order our coal In January, paying an initial payment of 10 per cent of the estimated cost, plus $1 a ton for a reservo fund. The average winter’s order was ten tons. At sl4 a ton, plus $1 per ton reserve, made a total order of $l5O. “The buyer pay sls to the bank In

tain to figure strongly In an upward trend. They have been held back too long through fear of unfavorable legislation In Washington A few months of rest from congressional interference will put them more in line with other stocks.” Another Wall Street concern, which also claims “inside Information" says: "Watch railroad stocks shoot up if the railroads can go their way until next December without interference from Congress. - ’
January, likewise in February and March. His ten tons of coal will be delivered In April. Then, with $45 on deposit, he gives the bank his note for $lO5. This he pays off In monthly installments of sls, and in October, having paid a few dollars interest, he has his winter’s supply of coal In the cellar —paid for.” The coal, says Stern, comes In carload lots direct from the mines. The reserve fund is to pay incidental expenses o fthe coal committee and protect the bank against bad debts, and the unused balance will be distributed pro rata to the coal subscribers. What the local retail dealer thinks of this Idea has nothing to do with this story.
