Russian Lullaby Swings Audience Into Ovation
By WALTTR D. HICKMAN A LULLABY, sweet and low, swayed an audience at the Cadie tabernacle last night into t tremendous ovation during the program of the Ukranian National Chorus. When the last strains of the ‘'Lullaby," by Barvinsky-Koshetz, floated away, the audience broke out in un y. restrained appreciation. Time sEEvia'ScS 3* and again. Prof. Alexander Koshetz. conductor, I v and members of the chorus bowed in recognition of f|Slt the ovation which swept the t.X r - v big auditorium. WfiqTj. The a p p 1 a u s e was silenced only r'i ' when the thorns HHjpljjßF* repeated the after the chorus dience ’ r * ® the ovation until KOSHETZ Professor ICoshetr and a member of the chorus re-ap-peared. This chorus is the ultimate in organizations of this kind. We have nothing in America which can com-' pare with the Ukrainian chorus. Not I volume, but the blending of many voices givfs one the impression that a master is playing a gigantic organ. "Evening," "Early Morning.” "Woe is Me,” and numerous folk songs were other favorites with the audience. It is evident that Professor Koshetz is the guiding spirit of this band of singers from a strange land. He seemed to be more at home with his audience lats night than on his first visit here several months ago. He responded willingly to the request of the the audience for added numbers. , - -I- h + The soloist of the evening was Mile. Oda Slobodskaja. sopiar.n of the Petrograd ‘•opera. Her program showed a wide range, as it included works of Gluck, Beethoven, Massenet, Puccini. Dargomijskv and Tschaikowski. She ha a remarkable range. In her lighter numbers she was pleasing, but it was in the heavier and more dramatic selections that the real ability of this artist was reflected. “Look. Pretty Maiden.” reflected the lighter moods while the “Tosca” aria gave proof of the dramatic ability of Mile. Slobodskaja. who is truly an artist in song. She was gracious in yielding to the expressed desire of the audience for encores. Tims and nguin she responded to ovations, and on her tinai appearance. due to a prolonged ovation, the singer bowed and nodded "good night” to the audienee. -p + -fI.ast night will go down in musical |hi?tor\ in this city, as far as the artasts art conci med. as one of the few real great musical nights. Miss Elsa Huebner, president of the Federation of Public School Teachers, and Jud Klino were sponsors for the concert last night. The audience was less than fair as to size and nothing that the quality of the concert deserved. Those who attended gave proof of genuine pleasure during the concert. The truth is that the sponsors lost money in bringing the Ukrainian Chorus back to Indianapolis last night. The time is coming when it is going to be impossible for individuals to bring large organizations along musical liiws to Indianapolis. Hundreds of dollars can be lost in a few minutes. There must be a way of determining in advance if there are enough people in this city willing to support the efforts of those who bring great artists here.

Indianapolis needs a home for music. We are going to keep along in the same old rut until we all get | together and boost a civic forum or something which will give us a home for real music. It is nearly Impossible to pay the overhead and rentals on i certain auditoriums' in this city, if I am not misinformed. If we are going to have the best along music lines. Indianapolis must find a home for such art, and after getting a home we must guarantee that home against failure by sincere support.
