RALSTON DODGES POLITICIANS AND SENATE SPOTLIGHT Gentleman From Indiana Selects Unobtrusive Home in Washington, By JOHN CARSON, Timet Staff Correspondent 'WASHINGTON, Jan. 26.—01d Sam Ralston, Senator-elect from Indiana, Is going: to make his home in Washington at a little unobtrusive hotel on Capitol Hill. The term “Old Sam Ralston” Is not flippant but one which Is becom- ; ing popular in Washington with those who respect the Senator-elect and who count him in the race for the next Democratic presidential nomination. But to get back to the hotel and the result of its choice as a home. To Washington, or rather the skilled politicians of Washington, the choice of this hotel was a mistake. At. one time it was popular with Congressional folk and it is still patronized by some members of the House and Senate. But Washington has grown away from the Capitol, has passed on out beyond the White House, which is seventeen squares distant, and now the fashionable quarters are far out in what is known as "Northwest.” Out In that quarter Is the fashionable hotel, a great structure which spreads out over beautiful lawns and embrace* Its pwlmmjng pools and tennis courts and ball rooms. There live most of the Cabinet members who do not own their homes. There also live the Senators and Representatives who would be In the select set. There the eyes of the trained politicians look for timber. Friend* Frown So when Ralston came to Washington and began seeking a home, his friends who are more concerned about his future than ho is, insisted he go out to the fashionable hotel. When he announced he would make his ! home near the Capitol, they frowned. He was taking himself just one step out of the limelight. He could not af ford to save money in that way at this time. To all of this Ralston turned a deaf ear.
