STERLING REACTS WITH RUHR NEWS Speculators Place Importance on Italy’s Move Toward Economic Conference. RAILS SHOW STRENGTH Heaviness Is Reflected in Price Movements of Industrials, By WALL STREET JOURNAL NEW YORK, Jan. 24. —Sterling reacted slightly today on news of continued friction in the Ruhr but stocks attached far greater importance to steps by Italy looking toward a world economic conference. Prices in the general list were slightly higher at the opening. Renewed confidence had been imparted by the strength shown by rails in Tuesday’s late trade. This demonstration was continued in today's early dealings under the lead of Southern Pacific and B. & O. Industrials were not disturbed by another had break in Fisher Body, which dropped 6V2 to 165tg on initial sales. Price movement in the first hour presented the unusual mixture of strength in rails and heaviness in many sections of the industrial list. Wall Street has so often witnessed the opposite spectacle in recent years that It found evidence of the growing appetite for rails extremely refreshing. But professionals still operated on the theory that Industrials could not gain much ground while the situation remained so uncertain and the he irs continued their efforts to ferret out vulnerable spots. One of these was found in California Oil, whiclt was placed In an unfavorable light by recent reduction of California Crude and advances in MidContinent and Pennsylvania. Standard of California reached anew low on the move at 56U and California Petroleum at 74 '-j. Twenty active Industrial stocks Tuesday averaged 97.43. up .18 per cent; twenty active rails averaged 85.77, up .07 per cent. By Prilled I'imtnrinl NEW YORK, Jan. 24 —Moving again with Fisher Body, which broke badly on the stock exchange, Durant Motors was the outstanding feature of the New York curb at the opening It sold at OS’i. off 2 1 1 from last night's closing, and about 15 points under the recent high. The weakness in Durant, however, did not affect the rest" of the curb market. which was firm In most spots. Goodyear preferred went to 41up 2, with the prior preference up ' at 68. Gulf OH featured that group, going to CO, up I s ,. Chairman Stewart of Standard Oil of Indiana revealed in testimony at the Senate oil inquiry yesterday that some of his people had looked over Gulf Oil’s property. He declared negotiations for a merger were not pending, however. In the minings, there was an irregular movement. Fortuna broke badly to 45 but the Goldfields held steady.
