COURT RECORDS BRAND CHILDREN; LAW JSJCORED Storm of Protest Sweeps Chicago Against Present Juvenile Code. By United Press CHICAGO, Jan. 17.—John S. Curtin, former wealthy coal man, was today seeking a job to support five children. The children, their parentage branded by court record, were with their "un-wed” mother. Miss Kathleen Morrell, who planned to move to a small town where she could forget. A storm of protest swept Chicago today against the jaws which placed forever the brand of illegitimacy on the five children. In order to assure the support of the children, five charges were filed against Curtin, naming him as the father and ordering him to pay $l,lOO for the support of each child in installments covering a period of ten years. Miss Morrell, was freed officially of all blame when Mrs. Curtin refused to press the charges against her. The court, however, showed no mercy for either Miss Morrell or Curtain. “Neither Curtin or Miss Morrell are to be considered,” Judge William Ju. Morgan said. “One might forgive a woman who through love brought one illegitimate child into the world. But a woman who has through a period of thirteen years knowingly borne children—five of them—out of wed-lock cannot expect sympathy from the court. Neither should the law show any pity for Curtin. faro of the children is tho only thing to be considered.” The court finally decided that the only way to assure the children a name and support was to file charges of illegitimate parentage against Curtin. WHAT ARE WE COMING TO? MOURNS OLD LADY Rude Smiles of Hoi Polloi Drew Censure. “Indianapolis people are very apt to forget their manners on the streets and in public buildings,” severely remarked an elderly woman seated In the Traction Terminal building. The mirthful smiles on the faces of people who were openly watching a strange locking man with long hair reaching to his shoulders, and an exceedingly seedy overcoat evoked her criticism. He rolled a cigarette with great gusto. A ripple of smiles overspread the faces of people in the station A young man of the “flapper” type sitting on a seat across the aisle grunted in disgust and remarked to his companion, a feminine “flapper,” “Ain’t it heck, Grace? When a fellow puts on his glad rags and hopes somebody will notice him, you can’t get a soul to look your way. But an old
