Ward ‘Kills’His Two Children to Please Landlord Sophie Tucker Wants No Alimony When Lonely

iTT ILL the children if the hard-hearted landlord will not allow J\. children and dogs in an apartment house. Fond parelfcts, when you go flat-hunting in a large city, take a revolver with you if there are children. The little dears with not find Paradise in a steam-heated nat, but you can send ’em to another climate by pulling a revolver’s trigger. That is the way Solly Ward and Florence Moore solve the “childless” flat problem in “The Music Box Revue.”

T ARD and Florence had worn out their shoes and the ’ T “sweet" disposition of their two children. William Collier, the hard-hearted old janitor, had placed a ban on children. So all that Solly

Ward could do was to “shoot" the little dears. To me that is one of -the big “screams” of “The Music Box Revue,” which made its first Indianapolis appearance at English's last night. The material Is snappy, but it is the way that Ward, Miss Moore, Mr. Cqllier, Renie -‘Riano and Gus

A 8 SANTLEY

Alexander put it over that counts. Miss Moore, with the assistance of three men, play a burlesque on the bedroom farce earlier In the proceedings by the name of ‘Under the Bed.” } In this travesty Miss Moore is first seen mixing a non-Volscead drink while in bed. She is entertaining a “lover.” The telephone rings and the announces her husband. The visitor hides under the bed. The second man turns out to be a lover. When the telephone rings again she hides the second one under the bed. She introduces the two callers and gives the a “put and take top" to entertain themselves while “pap" is present. Rapid fun. Smartly done. As I am speaking of the cast 1 will continue that line of thought. Besides those mentioned we have other principals—Ethelind Terry. Joseph ~ar ley, Ivy Sawyer and, I might include Paul Frawley, the Bronx Sisters, Renie FUano, Mile. Marguerite, Frank Gill, Mr. Carlos and Miss Inez. It is impossible to go Into detail concerning the satisfying efforts of all of these people. Solly Ward makes a home run with “They Call It Dancing,” followed by dances by Carlos. Inez. Marguerite and Frank Gill. The satisfying work of these dancers is burlesqued deliciously by Rlano and Ward. Here Is dancing that Is dancing. Renie Rlano registers a big hit with “I’m a Dumbbell.” The chorus is as Individual as the revue. The girl? are features with this show, not mere ornaments. Now for some honest to goodness American language. “The . Music Box Revue,” as presented at English’s last night. Is effslly the best revue I have ever seen. It starts where every other revue stops. It Pis a paradise of beauty. Scenery suddenly comes from out of the stage and then vanishes. Beautiful girls suddenly appear from some hidden recess of the stage. Principals are suddenly . hoisted in the air. Here is novelty and a fteshness which aids in making this show the very best on the American stage today. Georgeous beauty is reflected in the famous Pearl number in which the marvelous Ethelind Terry be-

comes even more brilliant than ever. Here is a little woman who is one of the real finds on the stage. She can sing. She can dance and how she can wear the stunning duds! Tliis Pearl number is the prettiest stage picture ever presented. This one scene easily com-

one for TYY SAW VKk visiting English’s this week. Miss Terry Is even more lovely in this smart revue than she was In "Honeydew.” And how she advanced in her art. Sant ley and hls wife, Ivy Sawyer, appear in another splendid stage picture, called “Dining Out.” Again the “stage elevator” Is used. Girls representing the food chosen from the menu, appear and dance during the dinner. Here Is novelty In the Xth degree. I must not fail to menAtJon “The Fountain of Youth.” This 'scene is fairyland at its most dazzling seif. I could rave on and on. It Is not necessary. Just this final word. Don't wait until Wednesday to get your tickets. Do it this very hour or you will be out in the cold. Don’t telephone me and say. “My dear Mr. Hickman, use your influence and try to get me tickets.” I will not be “at home.” Do your own shopping, because A. F. Miller is mighty Independent, nicely so. these days. I recommend every minute of “The Music Box Revue.” It is the last word in entertainment. It is 1.-etter than any “Kolilcs” show 1 ever have seen. These are my sentiments. The treat of the century—that’s what it Is. At English's all week. -I- -I* -Ionder What a Clown Thinks About While He Is Clowning Have always wondered what a clown thinks about while he Is • making people laugh. After seeing Kerry Corwey convulse a Eyrie audience with hls nonsense, I arrived*, at the conclusion! hat a ciowr. has to think all the time. It takes brains to be a clown; that is, a successful clown. I place Corwey in that class. He is not an acrobatic clown but a musical clown. He disguises musical instruments in an apparatus which looks like a fence. Probably the funniest stunt he ®uoes is a travesty on a stage shooting act. It takes honest-to-goodness brains to think up such foolishness as this. Corway is head "and shoultiers above every other act on tile bill. Larry Harkins and his Monarchs of Melody offer a program of instrumental and vocal music. This

act suffers, as several acts have recently, by bathing the stage in somber lights. Somebody is wild over a purple and orange colored stage. have lights up and give these bands 'a chance to be seen by the audience. fSfcbison and Pierce have a lot of pleasing nonsense In an act called “No More Saloons.” Tt isn’t the material that counts but the way the team puts tt over. Carson and Kane op"n the show with songs and Carson's conception of a tap dance is excellent. Johnson and Mclntosh appear In blackface. They dance and play the piano. The sketch end of the bill is presented by Mark Hart and company in “My Daughter's Husband.” The situations have been done many times on the vaudeville stage. They need new material. Austin Goetz and Fae Duffy open ,with a well done wedding number. Their material is Individual. The movie feature Is Reginald Denny In “Round Eleven” of “The Leather Pushers.” At the Lyric all week. -I- -I' -IFdlth Clifford Exposes the Flapper in Song Now I know what a flapper Is. Edith Clifford, comedienne at the Palace this week, tells the world what a flapper Is. Edith Clifford, comedienne at the Palace this week, tells the world what a flapper Is. The flapper Is a "man trapper." That is what Miss Clifford calls that brand of glrla whlls singing a song. Miss Clifford has a number of songs which one will want to whistle. Her gowns are pretty. The entire act radiates class. The pianist plays a medley of songs. Nicely done. Eddy and Wynn have an act which is different. The man plays a piano while a phonograph is playing. The woman of this act tyears some stunning gowns. It seems the women at the Palace this week are trying to see who can wear the best gowns. Eddy and Wynn are billed as “The Indianapolis Pair” and the man admits it with pleasure. Another pleasing act. < The Three Voices are three men. They have a novelty In a song which burlesques a modem wedding. Special scenery Is used. They know how to harmonize. The Skelly-Helt Revue features an eccentric funmaker and several girls. A telephone bit Is pleasing. The man Is easily the feature of this act. I missed Rice and Werner cn the show I reviewed. I noticed yesterday a tendency on several of the acts to ’’roast” ♦he audience for not applauding. f Mr. Actor, Miss Actress —such tactics have no place on the American stage. You are dead wrong when you attempt such things. The movie feature of the bill Is Katherine MacDonald In "White Shoulders.” At the Palace all week. -!- -I- -!- Hcosier State Song Is on Rialto Bill The Hooaier State song “On the Banks of the Wabash” Is given prominence on the program at the Rialto this week. The house manager gives a brief history of the song and then introduces a tenor who sings it. The chorus is picked up by a male trio. The tenor handles the song nicely, but the other members' of the trio should learn the words. “Oh, By Glngo” Is the title of the musical comedy offering. Honors of this piece go to Walter Steffln, a blackface comedian. Apparently, Steffln has had considerable experience as a blackface comic, for he gives a creditable performance. Several vaudeville acts are Included In the offering. The photoplay feature is “Vendetta,” a dramatic picture In which Pola Negri is starred. (By the Observer.) -I- 4 -IBand Box Revue on View at Broadway Among the scenes in the “Band Box Itevue,” the current attraction Ht the Broadway, is a scene depicting an airplane station in which radio messages are received. This scene gives Jack Lamont, the featured comedian, an opportunity to work to advantage. Jack Fuaguay has more sides to handle than flie lilSEST!!!! STOMACH UPSET, ME TOO MUCH Instantly! ALIMONY may be alright, but what good is cash when a girl is lonely? That’s the wav' Sophie Tucker thinks about it when her “Lovin’ Joe”, got lost to her. This is just one of the jazz-time melpdy expressions of Sophie at B. F. Keith’s. Sophie Tucker is the undisputed “Queen of Jazz.” Her artistry is at its highest point today. This'woman knows how to put “soul” warmth in a jazz song.

first comic and makes good with the audience. Asa whole the cast Is a fairly good one, but It lacks ’’pep’’ which is so essential to a burlesque show. The members of the chorus are not bad to look at, but they, too, go their work without enthusiasm. The best bit in the show Is the “Road to Fairyland” scene In which the entire company takes part. A number of the chorus girls have bits in this scene that get over. The cast Includes Howard Harrison, James G. 'Moore, Henry Neiser, Harry Franz, Nellie Nice, Lillian Harrison, and Frances Smith. SOPHIE TUCKER returned yesterday to Indianapolis after a long absence. She is flushed with her recent London success, she has a right to be proud of that triumph if I am righty informed. She uses two pianos and two pianists who play at the same time. Sophie she w,lll pardon my freedom of words, Is dressing her act as she never has before, hut the fine clothes has not made a vain queen of this woman. She Is still a fine American. She makes a ballad out of “Who Cares?" One feels a little tugging at the heart while she is doing this number. She “struts" the melody while singing "The Sheik of Alabam.” She was on the stage nearly an cop Lift Off with Fingers

hour yesterday afternoon because the audience demanded It. It was a fine ovation to an artist. wh,o always gives an audience her very best. Miss Tucker sings jazz as It should be done. She is not an experiment. She Is an instituffon. At Keith’s this week you wi(l find A1 and Fanny Stedman. Need I say more? The riot starts the minute they come on the stage. The "false teeth” bit is musical and facial nonsense at its funniest stage. Rare fun, that’s what this team offers. , Not satisfied with giving us so much, the Keith people also give us Clarence Oliver and George Olp in “Wire Collect.” Here is a sweet little sketch, full of sentiment and song. Nicely mqunted and splendidly acted. A real treat. (Gosh, he who writes this has no gloom in him just now.) Mary Jane, billed as the “springhtly comedienne” is satisfying In a number of songs.
