Wesley Barry Is Many Times a Hero in a Sort of Mince Pie’ Photoplay

By WALTER D. HICKMAN SANTA CLAUS with tears in his eyes is the kind of Santa that Wesley Barry impersonates. Am speaking of that freckled-face boy. The chap who has more spots on his face than any other lad. Barry becomes an unhappy Santa Claus in “Heroes of the Street” when a policeman is killed on Christmas eve. Barry, with his eyes full of tears, puts on Santa’s uniform and plays Old Santa so as not to disappoint the children of the murdered policeman.

Wesley Is mighty sad during these scenes because he Is a son of the copper who gave his life while on duty. “Barry's new movie, "Heroes of the Street,” is not sad all the time. It Is a regular mince pie. I discovered drama and melodrama, comedy and farce and a dash of satire now and then. This movie surely was made for boys who read the Alger books, as the hero turns detective and outwits a master mind in crime. The hero nearly meets death at the hands of thr villain, but our hero of the streets comes up smiling and with his freckles sparkling. This movie may turn out a large crop of youthful detectives in Indianapolis. Who can tell? This is the sort of am improbable yarn which will appeal to a chap who is passing through the Alger period of life. I believe it will do him no harm, because right always triumphs. Not a ong movie, badly directed in spots. Llthough the Barry movie is the featured event at the Apollo this week. I received several good laughs in "The Champion,” which is an “Our Gang” comedy. A number of children play the chief parts in it. "The Champion” is a boy’s idea of what a fight promoter should be. The boxing scenes between the children arc "knockouts.” Rather think children from 10 to 60 will enjoy "The Champion.” At the Apollo all week. -1- -!- + New Brand of Flapper Revealed in Walter Movie Eugene Walter startled this old world some years ago by writing a ‘ sewer drama,” by the name of "The Easiest Way.” He is now given the credit of writing “The Flapper” for the stage. It has been made into a movie by the ; name of “What Fools Men Are.” A goodly number of men walked ‘ ever to the Ohio yesterday to see what kind of “fools” we be now. If the men in real life are of the same I brand as they are in this movie—well, pity the poor men and let us organize a woman's party to run this old world. The central figure of this story is a typical Eugene Walter’s characteri zation. She is more than a flapper. I have always thought that a flapper is a female who at the age of 16 attempts to be a mild Peggy Joyce. Not a i really harmful creature but a sort of adventuress. A flapper flirts (NKdously, but she doesn't wreck homes. The gay little bobbed-hair flapper -(p this movie is a vampire. She knows

how to wreck homes and she does it. She accepts gowns and’ jewels from any one who will give them to her. She is the wildest thing I ever have seen without being actually morally bad. When she wrecks a home, she doesn’t marry the man. She sends the husband back to his fireside a wiser man. Faire Binney is the flapper who wrecks Huntley Gordon and J. Barney Sherry. At the end of the picture she becomes remorseful and becomes as good as pie. She sprouts wings suddenly _ and decides she will “flap” nobody but her own husband. So all ends well. The real feature of the bill at the Ohio is A1 Sweet and his Singing Band. Here is an organization that knows its business. The band music is pleasing and their singing pleases as well. Their musical impression of a circus parade is a gem. While I was there the audience gave Sweet and his players a big reception. They deserve it.
