CLERK IN HOTEL SLira GUEST Wealthy Clothing Manufacturer Killed at Chicago. By United Prets CHICAGO, Jan. 11.—Authorities today checked the story told by Matthew Callahan, 23, night qlerk, who shot and killed Sigmund Moss, wealthy clothing manufacturer, in the lobby of the Seville Hotel here -last night. Callahan told police Moss and his wife quarreled in their room and disturbed other guests. The clerk said he warned the couple they would have to keep quiet or he would put them out. “I went downstairs to the desk,” Callahan said. “A few minutes later Moss came down and attacked me. I pulled a revolver from the drawer c,nd shot him.” Mrs. Moss declared she and her husband had quarreled and Callahan attempted to intervene and was abusive. Mrs. Moss formerly was a cabaret entertainer.
POLICE ARREST THREE AFTER HEARING OF FIGHT Suspicion of Craps Game in Indiana Ave. House Leads to Charges. After hearing of a fight Wednesday afternoon, police said they suspected a craps game might have been in progress at the Lincojn Club. 633 Indiana Ave. Therefore Anthony Southers. 40, colored, 924 W. Eleventh St., was arrested on charges of keeping a gambling house and assault and battery. Yerkes Henry, 23, colored, “city,” was charged with'gaming and assault and battery. Arthur Boyd, 22. 1825 S. Keystone Ave.. was charged with gaming and drunkenness. The trouble occurred in an argument over $lO, the police said. WOMAN DRUG ADDICT TO BE TREATED IN PRISON Tennessee Woman Sentenced to Fifteen Days. Edna Brand of Nashville, Tenn., who was arrested on a charge of larceny after she was alleged to have taken a purse in a downtown store, was sentenced to fifteen days in the Indiana woman's prison. Judge Delbert O. Wiimeth, after hearing the woman's story, directed that she receive treatment for the drug habit while she is confined in prison. A email amount of a habit-forming drug was found in Miss Brand’s possession, police said. AHLGREN FAVORS DIRECTOR OF AVIATION IN CABINET Republican House Floor Leader Speaks to Aero Club. Establishment of a Government department of aeronautics is favored by Oscar A. Ahlgren of Whiting, Republican floor leader of the House of Representatives. he said in a talk to the Indianapolis Aero Club at the Chamber of Commerce last ngilit. The importance of aviation is so great, he said, that a “director of the department of aviation” should be added to the President’s Caoinet. During the World War Representative Ahlgren was a member of an aerial reconnoisance squadron. BAKERS ELECT A. W. GRAVEL PRODUCERS ADOPT PROGRAM OF LEGISLATION Gasoline Tax Approved at Annual Convention. Indorsement of a 2-cent lax on gasoline, a uniforth vehicle tax law, and retention of the present tax levy in the State highway fund was the legislative program of the Indiana Sand and Gravel Producers’ Association today. S. C. Hadden, secretary of the Allied Motor Commerce, spoke on needed' legislation for financing the highway program at the eighth annual convention of the gravel association in the Claypool Hotel today. Other speakers were H. Colin Campbell, Chicago; F. Bergraf, assistant engineer of tests for the Illinois State highway commission, and H. Hinkle of the Indiana State highway commission.
