SOYBEAN CULTURE FARMERS’ TOPIC King Corr. Forced to Share Honors With Vegetables on Short Course Program. SESSIONS ARE CROWDED Women Are Given Instruction in Uses of Modern Household Conveniences. Bu Timet Special LAFAYETTE. Ind., Jan. 10.—King corn, Indiana’s leading crop, shared honors today with the soybean, a coming crop, and vegetables on the annual short course program, at Purdue University. The annual meetings of the Indiana Corn Growers' Association and the Indiana Vegetable Growers’ Association featured the short course program and several hundred of tnose here for the work attended one of these sessions. Addresses by George M. Briggs of the University of Wisconsin, Charles Me harry of Attica and C. M. Vestal of Purdue featured the corn growers’ program. Mr. Briggs enumerated the purposes of growing beans, for feed, for feeding to all kinds of livestock, the pressing out of the oil which is used for food purposes or paints, and the use of the soybean flour and meal. The vegetable growers’ were welcomed to Purdue by Dean J. H. Skinner of the school of agriculture. Disinfection of vegetable seed, was discussed by M. W. Gardner and F. C. Gaylord of the Purdue staff. Prof. O. G. Anderson and Prof. W. E. Lommel, also talked and K. C. Hanley explained the work of the organizations fruit marketing. Ivan Morris,, Terre Haute, and W. is. Knehuck. Ft. Wayne, spoke on the work of local fruit marketing associations and gardening in northern Michigan. The other short course students •were given instruction in corn, livestock, poultry and dairy judging. The j women learned of the use of pressure, steam and tireless cookers. Dean Sarah Louise Arnold, of Boston, Mass., spoke on "The Daughter of the House.’’ Miss Marguerite Mallon, spoke on nutrition and Mrs. Helen McKinely, of the Purdue staff gave a demonstration of hints in home dressmaking. Coeds gave a fashion show. President E. C. Elliott and Dean Arnold, will be the speakers on to right’s program. U. in addressing a joint meeting of Clay Township farmers i and high school pupils. WABASH —Ten per cent of the 101 fire alarms answered by the local fire department last year were false, records show. The total lire loss here last year was less than $7,000.

NICHOLSON DEFENDS ANTI-SALOON LEAGUE Noted Reformer Answers Charges of William Dudley Foulke. By Timex Special RICHMOND, Ind., Jan. 10,—Replying to the charges of William Dudley Foulke condemning the Anti-saJoon League method of obtaining the passage of the Volstead act, Timothy Nicholson, noted reformer and president of the Indiana Anti-saloon League since its origin, stated that if a civil service provision had been affixed to the law it would not have passed Congress. Mr. Nicholson said that putting the enforcement division under civil service might have been more desirable, still it probably would not have meant a perfect enforcement. COMPROMISE $25,000 SUIT By Times Special WABASH, Ind., Jan. 10.—Mrs. Anna L. Walker, who filed suit against the estate of John M. Curtner for $25,000 for services as housekeeper, when no provision was made for her in the will, has compromised with the executor for $5,200.
