Y., Jan. 4.—From a man who is regarded as one of the outstanding Democratic presidential possibilities for 1924, a joint session of the New York Legislature and a large gathering of spectators heard on Wednesday a most outspoken denunciation of national prohibition, as now provided. The speaker was Alfred E. Smith, newly installed as Governor of New York by yiriue of the landslide which carried him into office last fall after a campaign based in a measure on the dry issue. Emphasizing his lack of sympathy with attempts to control public morals by restrictive laws, the returning Governor also asked for the repeal of the present State law providing for censorship of motion pictures by a board of censors. Smith broke a precedent in delivering his opening message to the Legislature In person from the speaker’s as Woodrow Wilson did in adCongress to the astonishment w>f the nations just after he became President. Legislature pass a resolution at the earliest possible moment requesting that Congress immediately amend the Volstead act to permit light wines and beer. He further recommended that New York State become the pioneer in a movement in Congress to amend the national constitution so that henceforth the people and not the legislatures shall have the power to ratify or reject constitutional amendments.

JAPANESE IMPORTS LARGE TOKIO, Jan. 4. —Goods imported from Germany the first nine months of the year amounted in value to 86,550,000 yen or 5.7 per cent of the total imports during the period, amounting to 1,523,670,000 yen, according to the Department of Agriculture and Commerce. Germany was sixth in the list of Importing countries.
