SEMÌLES POINTS | TOIUCTORY OF OHI MBS Declares Coa! Workers Blocked Wage Cutting in All Fields of Labor. By ELLIS SEARLES, Editor United Mine AVorlters Journal. Copt/rinht, 1922, by United Xetcs WiASHIXGTON, Dee. 29.—Glanclng back over thè field of organized labor in this country for thè year 1922, we sindone notatole accomplishnient of thè United Mine Workers of America that stands out above all others, and that is thè fact that thè coal miners' Union, by making its wonderful and successful struggle in its Xation-wide strìke, definitely put a stop to thè movement for reduction of thè wages of thè workers in every line of industry. In thè early part of thè year employers everywhere appeared to be under thè speli of a mania for wage reductions. In numerous instances tliey succeeded in forcing their employes to aceept reductions in their wages, but thè cost of living stili remained high. In those crafts where thè men were without sufficient strength to resist Khis attack thè wage reduction craze swept on. There is no telling how far this campaign mignt have progressed had it not been for thè snag it struck when it tackled thè United Mine Workers of America. Coal operatore were insistine on reduction of thè wages of miners, although miners were not even then making a living for their fami Li es. The United Mine Workers of America decided that it was time to put a stop to this onslaught and thè miners went into their great strike. It took Ave months of hard struggle for them to win out, bus they won- They took no reduction. nor did they tose anything that they possessed before thè strike. The ending of tlie strike marked also thè end of thè movement for thè slashing of wages. The tender.cy now is for higher pay for workers in all Industries. We hear but little cutting wages in these days since thè miners won their strike. The miners won thè fight for all or organized labor. CARRIES AWAY JEWELS Mrs. Virginia Osgood, 1957 Ruckle St., retumed home last night and discovered a burglar had opene i thè side window of her house and had ransacked every room. The thief had carried away a child's opal ring, two turquoise rings, a gold neck Chain and $1.05.
