Dee. 28.—Appeal of Frederick Edward Bywaters, 20-year-old naval steward, aaglnst sentence o£ death for murder of his sweetheart's husbund, went to thè home secretary todav. baeked by monster petitions eontaining more than a million signatures. Bywaters was sentenc-ed joJntly wth Mrs. Percy Thompson, elght jvars his senior, for murder of her luisband Oct. 4. She is about to become a mother and also appealed. but with few petitions. The lord chief justice refused to eonsider a joint plea for clemency earlier in thè month. The couple vili be hanged together in Penionville jail, Xorth London, unless Bywater’s appeal is succes.sful. Women, attracted hy his youth and by certain disclosures durine thè trial, started thè huge round robin petitions which have gathered thousands of names for eaeh hour they have heen in circuiation. Mrs. Bywaters, aged mother of thè eondenined youth, herself, seeured 15.000 names. The crime was committed Oct. 4. Bywaters admitted having stabbed Thompson who had befriended him. but who had quarreied with his wife eoncerning her friendship with thè young steward. Ile declared he was "no vulgaj assassin’* and that Mrs. Thompson, in whose arms her dying husbajid was sound, was entirely innocent. Despite Mrs. Thompson’s approaching motherhood, it is believcd she will be executed.

Ralph Updike, judge prò tem., suspended a sixty-day Indiana tifate farm sentence against Edward Pake. 2126 Bloyd Ave., but Pake was fined S2OO and costs. Pake has four children and thè court that was th*' rea son he suspended thè penai sentence. Elsie Ray, who. it was alleged, was fornd intoxicatel in thè city hospital grounds Sept. 3 ft , testifted that Glen Carter, 1049 W. Eighteenth St., sold her a half-pint of white mule for sl. Carter was fined SIOO and costs and sentenced to thirty days in jail. Others fined were: Walter Jones. 8100 and costs; Alfred Farmer, SIOO and costs; James Jordan, SIOO and eosts; Will Doughty, 550 and costs; Vern Miller. SSO and eosts; Edward Mitchell, SSO and costs: Harry Mitchell, SSO and costs. and William Fase, SSO and costs.
