JIMMIE MURPHY SA YS ‘DEADLY VANITY’ IS CA USE OF ACCIDENTS Even on Track Where Speed Abounds Veteran Auto Pilot Exercises Extreme Caution in Every Race—Suggests Mental Machinery Overhauling for Traffic Hog.

BY JACK JTTNGMEYER LOS ANGELES, Dee. 2S.—Jimmy Murphy, fastest man on wheels, has no patience with thè Street speedster who is piling up frightful national toll. “Much recklessness.” he says. with his verbal cut-out open, “is thè eheer, deadly vanity of thè man who steps on thè gas because he wants thè world or his passenger to see what a virile and masterful fellow he is. “Nine cases out of ten, he's mut-ton-headed rather than masterful.” This thoughtful, self-eontrolled, genia! little Irish-American cut his eve teeth on racing tires and his wisdom molare on track accidents. No one would accuse him of being fainthearted, but he attributes his laurels to a degree of caution of which thè average driver would be ashamed. Forget thè Brarado “The fellow who has an impulse toward bravarlo,” said Jimmy, “had better overliaul his mental machinery, especially if he's sitting at a stecring wheeL “Of course, every race driver knows thè seductions of thè speed siren inciting him to carelessness. That’s one of thè temptations we have constantly to fight, especially during thè early

There is such a thing as excessive speed even in places dedicated to speed. “But there’s no place to teach you thè value of rigid self-discipline like thè speed bowl, where even wnth thè utmost preeaution your chances of lise and tìeath are almost even. I’ve seen many crashes and have fìgured in severa!, and I have come to have a high respect for danger. Fans' Views on Ball Park Sports Editor. Indianapolis Times: Who supporta thè Indians? Surely not tiro wome. I venture to say nini ty per cent of thè crowd at ball games are men. You do not suppose business men who • have offices downtown will go to a ball park situated out in thè residence district. RULE CHANGES OÌSGUSSED IT GRID MEETING Officiate Suggest Ways for Deciding Tie Games—Nothing Definite Decìded. By United Press NEW YORK, Dee. 28.—Football beef as well as football brains was much in evidence at thè second annusi meeting of thè American Association of Football Coaches. Great mentore of thè sport and former stars whose names are engraved deeply on thè tablets of football history crowded thè anteroom, renewing old acquaintances and making new ones. Interest of thè meeting was centured chiefly on thè report of thè rules committ.ee, headed by .Major Daiy of West Point, which proposed several changes. It was evident from thè start that none of thè coaches were in favor of changes involving an increased penalty. The suggestion to prohibit eìipping from thè rear and side and to Impose a penalty of twenty-five yards from such infractions was promptly voted down as was thè motion to increase thè penalty for delaying tho game. One of thè most significant actions taken by thè coaches was thè approvai of thè try for point aster touclidown that has been in use this yc-ar. All seenied to feel that thè new rule had received a fair trial and that, if it did not fulfill all thè requirements, it would at least do until something Ix'tti-r could be euggested. In this connection John W. Heisman of Pennsylvania suggestod that in event of a tie game both teams be given three extra downs and that tiie eleven which succeeded in advancing thè ball thè greate.st distance should he allowed thè extra point to decide thè game.
