The discussion prò and con shows thè issue to be living, and if we can interpret thè full ternper of thè people, there is a detennination to keep prohibition intact, notwithstanding thè pttempt to throw odium on thè law, and on those who are set to enforce it. “We need to keep our thought on thè moral wave awhile. lt never rolled so high as at thè present. This array of dolls ls not what Santa Claus brought some lucky Indianapolis girl. It ls a few dolls from Kipp Bros. Co., 41 S. Meridian
Only Santa Claus and mothers know with what eagerness thè little girls of thè World look forward to reoeiving their Christmas dolls. And they see that thè little girls are not disappointed. if thè “baby” Le only a rag doli. Louis Xessler, who has been with Kipp Bros. Co.. 41 S. Meridian St., for thirty-five years and who has been in thè doli business fifty years, recalled thè days of thè wax dolls, and o? thè manv dolls before it, as he prepared for Christmas. When thè first doli was created. history does not teli us. Perhaps, In thè Land of Long Ago. some tribai daughter gathered to her a bundle of twigs, olothed in green leaves. Or possibly thè first doli carne into belng when a warrior carved from bone or wood an imago for thè pleasure of a little ehild. We do know that in aneident times. carved figures were worshiped in thè temples. Some human characteristlcs were attributed to these images. Then. down through thè centuries, thè dolls grew more and more human thè stara which will lead men to thè throne of God, thè Rev. Joseph Parden Armistead, pastor of tne Downey Avenue Christian Church. declared yesterday in his sermon on “Stars That Lead to thè King .” “The world stands equally in need of thè Pavior today.” said Dr. Armistead. “The star that guided thè wise men to thè King was a light from above, and so today there is a light above which, if followed. will lead men to thè feet of th< Savior.”

in thè oyes of thè people. The Lappa even believed their dolls had thè power to walk. The grovn-ups who read this will not"understand as their little daughters would, how these beliefs grew up. For what little girl is there that has not kissed her dolly good night and tucked thè covers around her as thè night grew cool? And what girl, when she grew “too old” for dolls, has not sighed as at thè loss of a dear friend, as she saw her treasure placed in a trunk for safe-keeping? It has been only within thè last century that thè doli has been commercialized. Probahly few resiùents of Indianapolis can remember thè lime when thè first dolls were brought over from Europe. The half-century dtiring which Nessler has handled dolls of every slze and varlety has seen manv changes in this favorite toy of thè feminine world. When he first entered Doli Land, wooden. jointed dolls were being bought up to stick out of thè top of stockings on Christmas morning. These toys soid at from 5 cents to sl. Just about fifty years ago thè china limb dolls with sawdust-stuffed bodies carne from across thè waters to brighten thè homes of American girla. The price was about thè sa me as that of thè wooden doli, and thè new toys ranged in slze from three to twenty-four inchcs. There were few human-llke features about this white-fared, stiff doli, yet it was loved whole-heartedly Wax Doli Arrives Then carne thè variations of this type of doli. First was thè stufTed cloth doli with a binane had and with hair that. although it may not bave been reai. at least looked naturai. These dolls sold at hlgher prices, rang ing from 25 cents to $2.50. The wax doli, famous for Hs beauty —and lts danger of freezlng—arrived on thè scene n>‘Xt. lts body was stuffed with straw sttiffing. The heads of these dolls weer of papier macho, finished with thè wax. The hair on some of them was made of wooden shavings, and was held In place with gilt or silver bands.
