inn GOBEHHHS Face Sentences as Christmas Prospect Aster Hearings. Nino young men faced prison, penai faina or jansentences as their Christmas prospect today. They sentenced by Jurìge James A. Collins in Criminal Court on pleas of guilty as follows: Roosevelt Greer, 19, two io fourteen years in thè- reformatory for grand arceny: John Brooks, 22, eolored, sl> 0 and costs and one to fourteen years in thè reformatory for grand larcenv; Joe Davis, coiored, for receiving stolen got-ls, tfi ree months on thè Indiana Stato Farm: James L. Brown, 2S, for grand larcenv, one to fourteen years in thè reformatory; George White, 21, for unlawful pos se.ssion of an automobile, returncd to reformatory a parole violator: Harry Turner, four months ,-it thè Indiana State Farm, for unlawful possessiori of an automobile Harry \Y. Nachand, SSO and costs and one day in jail, for rereiving r tel<e goeds; Raymond Dickerson, 21, for grand lareeny. Dite to fourteen years in thè reformatory, and Cornelius Johnson, 21, for grand lareeny, ?JOO and eo.sts and one to fourteen years in thè reformatory. FREEDOM IS BEFORE IRELAfiD —LLOYD GEORGE (Continned From Page One) ever loti Ireland, ouiet to thè point of gentleness, almost to thè point of appearing saturnine. A man of laconic utterance, he answered in nono syllables where ntost men would ha ve considered an oratorieal dehverance to be demanded by t'ne dignity of thè oecasion. But we sound In our few weeles' -acquaintance that bis yea was yea and his nay miant nay. He led thè Irish depjitation. He was asked whether he would sign. In his abrupt stancato manner he i%plied: ‘ Speaking on my own behalf I rnean to sign.” By his side sat a handsome young Irishmnn. He was Irish through and through, in everv respect a contrast to h' p taeiturn neighbor. Vivacious, buoyant, highly strung, gay, impulsive, but passing readily from gaiety to grimness and back to gaiety, full of faseination and cliarm —but also of j dangerous sire. That was Michael Col- • lins, one of thè mest courageous lead- \ ers ever produced by a vali xnt race. Nevertheless he hesitated painfully tthen thè quiet little figure on his left had taken his resolve. Both saw thè shadow of doom clouding over that fateful paper—their own doom. They knew that thè per. whlch affixed their signature at thè sanie timo àigned their death warrant. The little man saw beyond his mvt fall Ireland rising out of her troubles a free nation and that sufficed for him. Speetre of Death Michael Collins was not appalled by j thè speetre of death, but he had thè I Irishman’s fear of encountering that charce which comes so readily to thè ìlps of thè oppresseti—that of having succumbed to alien wile and beirayed ■ their country. Patriots who checrfullj face thè tyr.mt’s steel loc<> their nerve hefore that tlread acet’-atinn. It was thè lirst tinte Micino . Collins ever shotved icar. It was also thè las( time. I knew thè reason why Ite halted. aithougn he never uttered a word which revealed his mind, and I addressed my appeal to an effort to j demonstrate how thè treaty gave Ire- j land more tlian Daniel O’Connell and | Pamell had ever hoped for and that j h!s countrymen would be ever grateful to him not only for thè courage which won such an offer, but for thè wisdom which accepted it. He asked for a few hours to considr, promising a reply by 9 o’clock. Xinc passed, but thè Irish leaders dìd rot return. Ten. Eleven and they were not yet back. We had doubts as to whether we shouid see them a gai n. Then carne a message from thè secretary of thè Irish delegation that they were on their way to Downlng 6t When they marched in !t was clear from their faces that they had come to a great decision aster a prolonged struggle. But there were stili difficultles to overcome—they were, however, difflculties not of principie hut of detail. These were discusseti in a business way and soon aster 1 o’clock in thè morning thè treaty was romplcted. No Cletv to Passions Outside in thè lobby sat thè man v ho had used all thè resources of an ingenious and well trained mind, b.icked by a tenacious wi!l, to w--eck every endeavorto reaeh an agreement —.VIr. Erskine Chiiders. A man whose slight tigui-e, whose kindly. reflned and intellectual countenance, wnose cairn and courteous demeanor ofTered no clew to thè Aeree passiona which raged inside his breast. At every cruciai point in thè negotiations he piaved a sinister pari. He was clearly llr. De Va!era’3, emissary and faithfully did he fulfi.il thè trust reposed in him by thajt visionar>-, Every draft that emanated from his pen—and all thè fìrst drafts were written by him —challenged every fundamental position to which thè British delegate were irrevocably conimitted. He was one of those men who by temperament are lncapable of com- | promise. Brave and resolute he un- ! doubtedly was but unhappily for him- ! self he was also rigid and fanatical. When we walked out of thè room j where we had sat for hours together | wom wlth tense and anxious labor, j but all happy that our great task of j reconciliatlon had boeh achieved, we 1 met Mr. Erskine Cliilders outside, sul- j len with disappointment and com- ' pressed wrath at what he conceived to be thè surrender of thè principles ; he had fought for. I never saw him j aster that morning. Michael Collins and Arthur Griffith j I met repeatedly aster thè signature of thè treaty, to discuss thè many obstacles that surged up in thè way of it execution, and acquired for both a great affection. Poor Collins was shot by one of his country-men on a bleak Irish roadside. Worn Out by Anxiety Arthur Griffith died worn out by ! anxiety and toil in thè cause which i he had done so to carrv to thè summit of victory. Erskine Chiiders was shot down for rebeliion against liberties he had helped to win. Truly thè pathos Irish
freedom right to thè goal is paved with tragedy. But thè blood-stained wilderness is almost throueth ; 111 e ver i dant plains of freedom are stretched before thè eyes of this tortured nation. Ireland will soon honor thè name of Green Isle, and I am 1 proud to bave had a hand in erecting thè pillar which will formark thè boundary between ; thè squalor of thè past and thè hope of thè future..
