DAUGHTER’SPLEft SAUES FATHER Children Teli of Cruelties—Sentence Suspended. William Hess, 558 E. Washington St-, tried in Juvenile Court on charges of neglecting his fìve children, was saved from prison by thè pleas of his eldest daughter, Bernice, 16. Hess was chaxged with forcing his three daughters to sell candy on thè streets and poolrooms aster night to hira. The children were placed with relatives. He would force them to make thè candy at homc before they went to school in thè morning, testimony show ed. He threatened to shoot any one who carne between him and his family, policemen said. -For a year he lived in idleness while thè three girls, aged 10 to 16, made candy, went to school. cooked and washed and then walked thè streets at night until their candy was gone, driven'forth by threats of whippings, Bernice said. “I don’t want to see him go to prison because he is my father, but I can’t live with him,” said thè girl. PAVING GAP CLOSED The opening of thè paving gap on thè National road at Dunreith yesterday marked thè completion of thè paving system of thè Old Trail from Indianapolis to Washington D. C. The few gaps which remain unpaved between Indianapolis and Terre Haute are being rushed to completion. When these are linked thè road from St. Louis to Washington will be complete.
