SOUTHERN CRITICS CHOOSE ALL-STAR “DIXIE” GRID ELEVEN
Bv BILLY EVANS Dttring thè past tcn years thè South has certainly made rapid strides on thè gridiron. The class of football played below thè Mason and Dixon line compares most favorably with that of any other section. Alabama sprang one of thè reai surprises of thè season when Xen Scott’s pupils defeated Pennsylvania, 9to 7. HI FI gofs fìssi game UH HE PDINT Score Was 28 to 27 and Game Was One of Best Played Thls Year. By DICK AXDERSOS Sporta Editor A /X ARTIN SVTLLE / \ a~\ High School bash' ket-ball team lost f~ - —■ 1 a thrilling game f- - f 1 to Franklin High l 4 Friday night on I" f thè Martinsville | V yO floor. 28 to 27. The game was ■ — anybody's up unttl thè final mlnutes of thè game, vvh.cn Franklin oozed In one and and snatched apparent defeat freni thè sire. Both teams played a whirlwlni brand of basket-ball from thè Etarting whistle and provided thè fans In thè crcwded gym with plenty of thrllls. The strong rlvalry of thè two teams nded zest to tlie contest. The school velling was desfening. Both teams will be heard from thls year, as they aro both sveli balanced and are fightcre from thè word go. There was little to choose between thè two. although thè plavlng of thè mailer Franklin floor workers smacked of championship dava. Sefton. fioor guard; Underwood at center and Davis at forward for Franklin played a corklng game. Captaìn Bain •'of Martinsville at back guard, Cox at forward and Schralter at floor guard showed up fine. Schnaiter has thè maklng of one of thè beet floor guarda in thè State. 14 lo 11 at Hall The first first half end ed 14 to 11, with Martif brille leadiug. In. tho second half, Franklin, by fighting thè ball all of thè timo, managed to scoro 17 points io their opponente’ 13, and won thè game by thè margln of one polnt. A regrettabio thing happened In thè ©cond half. Referee Westover,-, who ofßeiated thè game, is not at fault and ruled as any other basket-ball officiai would have. In a mix-up under thè Martinsville ba. k®t. a Martinsville man was knocked out. The play moved out from under thè basket and down thè floor to thè Franklin basket before any one realized that any thing had happened. Referee Westover was watching play at thè Franklin basket and did not see it. The Martinsville captain ran up to Westover and siapped him on thè back ard ye'.led tlme out. and ther ran back with out telling him th© reason. At That tlme a Franklin forward had thè ball, and Westover. observing thè rules. let thè play ga through. and Franklin scored a*fteld goal. Then, when he tumed, he saw thè man out and called timo. The fault, if there ls any. is with thè management of thè Martinsville team for not having an umpire assisting thè referee. If there had been one thè lncident would not have happened. Referee Westover ruled that thè basket counted and asked Coach Lostutter if he wanted it under thè olrcumstances. Lostutter sald yes ani thè goal was counted. Those two | points won 'he game for Frantflln. Lostutter can not Vie blamed for faklng what was technirally his.' Any other coach would have done thè rame thing in a tight game. All In all it was a great exhibition cf baskethall and both teams know plenty about thè game. Coach Gìenn Curtis of Martinsville has a classe ìooking team and Lostutter of Frar.klln has a representativi bunch from thè place where “they grew ’em.” Frankiin (28). Martinsville (27).
