WATCH AND MOTOR ARE SUBJECT 0F ARGUMENT Which is thè more marvelous from a technical standpoint, a ! watch or an automobile? Robert E. Jack, chief engiheer of thè Olds Motor Works, has made thè following calculations, which are self-explanatory: A watch ticks sixty times a i minute, 3,600 times an hour, 86,400 times in one day, 31 f 536,000 times a year and 630,720,000 i tiipes in twenty years. An Olds eight, which had just completed a 50,000-mile tour, was : made thè basis of comparison. For each mlle thè engine turns over 3,213 times. There are 12,852 1 separate explosions taking place during' this number of turns. Figured another way around, an 1 explosion takes place every five , inches of travel. In 50,000 miles explosions would have taken place. i The 50,000 miles was covered in seven months. Therefore there were more explosions In this one motor in these seven Anonths than there are “ticks” in a watch in twenty years.
