Betty Blythe Passes Up Breakfast for Talk Fest
By WALTER D. HICKUAS Am not in thè habit of meeting "queens.” Queens generally do not wait for man or beast. (What is that man raving about now?) Will teli you. Betty Blythe. who played thè queen in “The Queen of Sheba” movie, passeri up breakfast to talk to me so you mlght know all about her. I think thè passing up of breakfast must have been a hardship, because I dldn’t cali upon her untll 11:30 a. rn. I was ready for lunch. She for breakfast. No, I didn’t stay for lunch. 1 have told you about many screen Et&rs. Miss Blythe wants a homelike eixstence wherever she is. So for this week, while appearing in person at thè Lyric, she has taken an apartment at thè Spink-Arms, where she dlnes quietly in her own private little “diningette.” One would suspicion thè “Queen of Sheba” would want a rovai dining room with many servants, two bands and all of that stuff But not with Betty Blythe. Plain as An Old Shoe “1 am Just as plain as an old shoe,’’ she told me. “When thè 3how is over I want to go to some quiet .place, rest and read. lam glad that 1 have 'tlme to read.’’ Sounds rather funny to hear such common sense talk from a “movie queen,” but Betty Blythe is a reai woman. She is more than a shadow actor. She is a lover of good music. She knows how to sing and on thè stage her songs are of thè better class. A sweet little lullaby which she sings easlly wins any audience. “We all want to get back to nature." she confided. "We all want thè slmjde things of lise. (Then she startled me.) We are all llke monkeys. Why ls it that every spring we ru nto thè woods? It ls because we want to get closer to nature and thè slmple things of lise." Then we talked of Lione! Barrymore, Lionel Atwill. and Ixtuls Wolheim of "’Hairy Ape” fame. Yes. She Is Beautiful Betty Blythe is one of thè niost beautiful women I ever have met. There is more than mere physical beauty to this woman—there is an lntellectual beauty. She doesn’t pose while one is paylng a social cali. She is just a reai woman and that is a wonderful thing now dava. No cigarette smoking or any of that stuff. Jutt re al. Nearly forgot to teli you. She was dressed in one of those-er-a-whatyoumacalllts—a long flowing house gown. Rather artistic looking. Not as elaborate as a queen would wear, but one of those pretty things American women love to wear while at home. Oh. yes, she had on some pretty beads, green ones I think. She has faith in thè movies and thè people who are in them. Her motto seems to be—study all thè tinte, give thè best that ls in you and be a reai American Citizen.
