TREND INDICATES BONE DRY ITI No Modification of Volstead Act in Sight Despite Big Gains of Wet Faction. DRYS ENTIRELY SATISFIED Only Chance of Liquor Lovers ls to Send Wet Majority to Congress. (iti ('nitrii X>rs WASHINGTON. Nov. 29.—Those who have been working up a thirst over prospeets of modifications in thè Volstead act might as well resign themselves to thè fact that they will have to enduro parched throats for an indefinite poriod. There will be a long dry speli bifore beer and light wines ever come back, despite thè views of two ieading Cabinet members who declare prohibition a failure. Three developments of Tuesday show thè trend: 1. The Whito House oflicially stated that President Harding will ask no modification of thè prohibition law In his message to congress next week. 2. Morris Sheppard of Texas, leader of thè drys in thè Senate and known as thè “father of prohibition," declared thè next Senate will be dryer than this one; he said drys are entirely satisfied with thè Volstead act and will permit no tlnkering with lt. 3. The House voted to deprive ships carrylng liquor of thè beneflts of thè proposed subsidy. Drys Have Majority Drys claim 296 members in thè new House as against 133 vets—more than a two-thìrds majority. Wets have only one chance. They will have to go out into thè country, just as thè Anti-Saloon League dld a decade ago, and begin digging around in thè grass roots. When they can send a wet majority to Congress, they can modify thè Volstead act —provi dpd they have a sympathetic executive in thè White House or can muster a two-thirds majority to override a possible veto.
PRINCIPAL ASKS FORPDRÌABLES Overcrowding at Arsenal Technical I high school has become so great that ; Milo H. Stuart. Principal has asked ! thè board of school commissionerà to erect four two-room portable buildings and to make alterations in some of thè buildings. The request was presented to thè board at its meeting Utst night. The letter stated that thè school day h.as been set at ten perioda, which is two periods longer than thè usuai high j school day. This has resulted in making it necessari' for many of thè children to go home aster dark. In an effort to take care of thè constantly increasing number of pupils, thè basements of thè old arsenal building, thè barracks and thè barn have been pressed into Service as class rooms and plans have been i.iade to convert thè basement of thè east residence into a class room. In addition to this. thè letter said, corri dora have been used for class tooms, study and conference purposes. According to E. U. Graff, superintendent of schools, there are 4.422 pupils enrolled at Arsenal Technical High School at present. He said that all indlcations point to a material increase In enrollmcnt at all three high schools at thè beginning of thè next tfrm in February. This will hring with it additionai problems, he added, as every high school in thè city already is overcrowded. At Shortridge thè question of renting additiona! space outside thè high school building has been under considenition for some time, he pointed out.
