Historic Turkey Day Grid Battles Will Wind Up Season of Many Upsets
NOTRE DAME, CORNELL AND OìjERS PLAY Nebraska Is Foe of Irìsh and Game Will Be Big Feature. CATHOLICS HAVE EDGE Pittsburgh and Penn State Will Meet in Their Annual Struggle. By HEXRY FA RItELL Uniti d Preti Syorts Editor NEW VORK. Nov. 29.—A1l 'he odds and ends of football will be gathered together tomorrrow and tucked away on thè shelf for thè officiai finale of 1922. Most of thè Thanksgiving days are purvlvals of old estabiished classica that ha ve not glven way to thè modero Idea of lettlng thè grid warriors enjoy thè hollday. In point of tradltion, thè CornellPennsylvania game at Phllailtlphla will be thè blggeet game of thè day. Coroell, wlth one of thè best teams in thè country, looka to be a longodds favorite, but Penn has refused to be Infiuencd by any klnd of dop ing and they may pulì a surprise. The Penti eleven has been thè Champion surprise team of thè season. Piti had an ln-an<ì-out season. loslng to Lafayette, West Virginia and Syra cuse, but In defeaung Washington and Jefferson, Glenn Warner showed a reai team. Defeated by Penn and thè Navy and getting only a draw from Syracuse. Penn State has had sort osar, off season. compared to thè record? of thè past two seasons. Pittsburgh looks to be a sllgiit favorite In thè middle west thè reai batti* of thè day should be staged by Nebraska and Xotre Dame. Both teams showed in tne East, and on thè game they played Notre Dame looks llke thè favorite. Nebraska was not only beaten by Syracuse, but was made to look very bad wìth lt. Notre Dame played one of thè greatest Army teams of years to a scoreless tie and thè honor? all went to thè wesiernere. The South goes In for more "Turkey day" games than any othr sectlon of thè country, and a number of gO‘)d games will be played belo* thè Masor.-Dixon line. Among thè head liners are: Georgia Tech and Auburo at Atlanta. C’entre and South Carolina at Dannile. _ ~— ~ George Washington and Gcorgetown aj Washington. John Hopkins and Washington and I.ee at Baltimore. Tennesssee and Kentucky at Knox ville. Vanderbilt and University of c'outh at Nashville. Virginia and North Caroliti at Charlotteville. The Georgia Tech-Auburn stame ought to be a bear. Both are standing for thè champlonshlp of thè South, slnce Auburn defeated Cen're. Auburo has lost only one game, and that to thè powerful Army eleven. Tech has lost to thè Navy and Notre Dame, all teams out of their own sectlons. . West Virginia and Washington and Jefferson would have had thè place of honor perhaps on thè entire schedule 1? W. and J. had not been defeated by Pi' üburgh. When thè Presidenta defeated Lafayette they were regarded as havlng one of thè greatest teams In thè whole country, but they got a sad bumping from Pitt. West Virginia is stili undefeated and ls in thè runnlng for thè eastero champlonshlp. Washington and Oregon and Southern California and Washington State have thè big games on tha Pacific eoast.

By SE A Service COLUMBUS. Nov. 29.—A colossal structure of gray concrete, it stands, quletly awaiting thè comlng winter sports and another season on thè gridiron. It ls thè new Ohio State University stadlum whose officiai opening was marked by thè defeat of thè Buckeyes at thè hands of Michigan on Oct. 21, 19 to 0. CATHOLIC EOAGK PAYS TRIBUTE TO PINOTELI Nearest Approach to George Gipp Seen on Gridiron So Far. By K. K. ROCK NE. Notre Dame Football Coach. Paul Castner. who was injured In thè game wlth Butler and put out of play for thè rest of thè aeason. is one of thè greatest naif backs thè game has ever produced. I don't believe there ever was a better back than George Gtpp. All iovers of football will remember thè ensationa! Gipp, and how death look hlm off so suddenly at thè dose o? hts greatest career on thè grid tron. Gipp. 1 am to'.d. was seìected by every football expert In thè coun:ry that year as a back on their nythlcal All-America eleven. Gipp could do everything that a football player ls Bupposed to do. He didn’t have a single weakness and what a glutton he was for punishment. Every team Notre Dame npposed was instructed to stop Gipp. He was a marked man in every' game, yet no one stopped hlm. and he seemed to thrive on rough treatment. He was immune from injuries. Paul Castner was thè nearest approach to George Gipp I ever expect to see on thè gridiron. Castner possesses all of Gipp s great abllity and r.erve, but Castner is a trlfle brittle. He is unabìe to stand thè pounding that Gipp absorbed wlth a smlle. The heart lse there. but thè body l-i weakei than thè will. Castner. like most fast men, ls inclined to be hurt more easily than thè plodder. Gipp. in that respect, was a decidecT exceptlon. . • -A It is olmost Imposslbla* to estimate what thè loss of a player of thè GippCastner typ means to a football team. I believe it would be conservative to say that thè offerse is lessf-ned 30 per cent. This year I am fortunate in havlng a couple of sets of fine backs, but thè los? of any star backfield man always makes ltself forclbly felt. The Indiana Dentai College Ave met their third stralght defeat Tuesday night on thè "Y" floor to thè fast Indiana State Normal Ave of Terre Haute 30 to 18. The Norma!
