Administers Mental Embalming Fluid; Enough Music for All in Vaudeville

Bit WALTER D. HICKMAX Mental embalming fluid was slopped all over me last night. But—here is a confession—l liked this particular brand. '- /V I am stili a Uttle stupid today because Pauline Frederick administered thè embalming fluid in large doses. Miss Frederick, aster a iengthy and profltable sojourn in thè mqpies for about eight years, decided some | months ago to return to thè stage where she might see and hear her I audiences. Aster a stay of several months In Chicago, she landed at thè Murat last night in a play ealled , "The Guilty One.” The author and thè cast eonspired to play a trick upon thè audience and I will admit they certainly do turn thè trick. It s just about as nice a Uttle trick as I ever have seen on thè stage. Aster thè trick is played, neither thè authors or thè players ‘‘rub it in,” but pass thè joke off as hysterically and dramaticaliy as possible. “The Guilty One” operates as a sort of a mental opiate. Tou want to think, but Miss Frederick and her talented assistants sail on and your desire to think leaves you. You take thè hook, poie, line, bait and everything else. I did. and I think I ani just an ordinari-, everyday theater goer. I was fooled and I loved it. I think it is unfair to state just how you will be fooled, because ignorance is bliss, and thè more ignorant one ls. thè better he will like thè show. So I think I will give you a chance to be drowned in some exciting embalming fluid. This play is a sort of mystery affair. Xicely timed and xpertly acted by Miss Frederick, Charles Waldron, Xoel Lesile, Charles Dalton (splendid as a Scotland Yards man). Henry Warwick, Ethel Intropodl and Florence Edney. Conceming Miss Frederick Rather surprised to see Miss Frederick so slender. Here is a clever woman. She is a good actress. She knows her theater and her public. hen she tums loose her dmmatic talenta In thè second act —well. 1 was ready to beiieve what she was trying to make us belleve. When she is rebeliious, she is lnteresting. When she is in tears. she is divine. The movies did not injure her abillty to act. You actuaiiy cap hear every word she utters. That's something these days. Mr. Waldron, as thè trick husband bluffs you dramatlcally. just as Miss Frederick does. Rather have thè hunch thè average theatergoer will enjoy thè experience of being fooled by Miss Frederick, thè plavwrights and her several assistants in thè cast. At thè Murat today, Wednesday afternoon and night. ■ *!• -I- -IAnd There Was Music The men who booked thè acts a.t Keith's this week must have had thè irnpression there was a musical convention in town. The current bill is swamped, in fact it is lop sided with music. There is classical and jazz music. The violin and thè piano is a popular instrument this week. If thè actors don't play an instrument they sing. There are two strictly classical acts on thè bill—Kovacs and Goldner, a pianist and violinisti Mnryon Vadie. a dancer. and Ota Gygi, a violinist who plays reai numbers. This is giving us thè musical classica In extra heavy dose 3. but thè truth is—it is reai music. I have thè feeling you will forgi ve those who placed so much melody on thè bill. The Vadie and Gygi act belongs to thè better sort. Miss Vadie ls a tal-c-nted dancer. The closing number, “Rondo Capricioco,” in which she is assisted by thè Portla Mansfield dancers, is as pretty a dance pieture as one would want to see. Here is classical dancing—pure, clean and beautiful. Xothing objectionable here. Kovacs and Goldner play mostly classical numbers. Both are artista. They make a concerto out of "Aprii Showers.” AI Shayne and Frank Donia are very musical and mighty noisy. They seerned to “land well” with everybody but me. Leo Miller

My favorite dog this week is thè one owned by Coley and Jaxon in "The Minstrel and thè Maid.” Here are two people and a dog. The humans of this act walk right out on thè stage and go to work to make uà laugh. The woman is so clever she made this act my favorite on thè bill. The dog seems to appreclate thè quaint and individuai humor of his mistress. The second dog exhibited at thè Palace Comes in an act ealled "Young America.” It deals with what some people might think happens in a juvenile court. This sketch is so farfetched it ls actuaiiy misleading as to what actuaiiy happens in a reai juvenile court. Overacted by those in thè cast. The dog is thè only ©ne w r ho appears rea!. A ventriloquist is generally satisfled with one dummy, but Vernon has slx of them on thè stage a thè sama tlme. It takes w-ork to do this and Vernon gets along nicely with it. Many crimes - have been eommitted in thè name of burlesque. In my experience covering thè theater I have made lt my business to keep in touch with all branche of entertainment. I have arrlved at this eonclusion —on thè whole, thè Columbia Wheel burlesque does not offend nor insult, but actuaiiy entertains. I am not a burlesque fan. Burlesque today successfully to compete in thè entertainment fleld must be clean, it must be clean. it must not be an outing for roughneeks. Clever men and women can entertain successfully American eltizens on thè burlesque stage without insulting their intelligence or damoging their rnoroìs.
