By MARY COLLINS TERRY For thè National Kindergarten Association. “It can’t be dona.” “How would j-oti do it?” "Nobody reads around this place.” These were some of thè dlscouraging responses met with when thè Interested Mother suggested starting a public library In thè tlny western town In whlch she llved. But there were others w r ho were eager to ; have lt. “lVell it won’t hurt to try," was thè detennined and cheery response which answered thè objectlons. There were several thlngs to be considered. Granted she could gain thè generai cooperatlon of thè town, there were books to be seciired. a sultable library station sound. and librarians located to take charge. lt was deelded to divide thè town up into distriets. and to have tliese distriets canvassed by some of thè town peopie. A meeting was called of all of those who were willing to help, and thè enthusiastlo response was gratlfying. Posfers Annonce Pian Prior to thè actual cajivass for donations of books and magazlnes, eral attractive, posters thè Project were displayed In thè churches and village iiostoffice. Ona of these read: “Lend thè book you like to your neighbor. “Help start a library for 'Woodville. , ‘ One hundred and eighty-seven books rewarded thè solicitors. And these were collected by generous automobile owners, and taken to thè home of thè interested mother who through previous knowledge of library work was able to catalogue thein simply and get them ready for circulation. Meanwhile plans were being made to secure an empty store In a building of centrai location. A warm little note appealing to thè owner’s civic spirit secured tho use of thè place, rent free. for a month while thè proJect was being started. Aster that a very nominai rental was to be charged which could be easily ralsed by an occasionai entertainment. Canvassers Enthuse It was a great day when thè little band of workers opened thè library. The shelves once used for dry goods display thè 187 cherished books. One large table did for a librarian's desk. A few chairs and several shelves of magazines, all in good condition, eomprised thè furnishings. The enthusiastic book canvassers became librarians, giving an afternoon a week of their time, and enabling a neat little sign on door to say: “Woodville Public Library.” Open Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday, 2p.m.to sp. m. •_>') At present thè children of thè community are thè most frequent borrowers and it is a source of pleasure to those in charge to place good juvenile reading In their hands. Plans are on foot for a picnic for thè lihrary’s benefit. By this and similar affairs thè library board, composed of other interested mothers and some of thè town’s business men expect to add new books and defray thè very nominai expense of running thè library.
