Reid j may not be a typical Clarence, but he , does some very effective comedy work. The piano tuning scene and thè saxophone bit are deliclous comedy ! moments. Clarence's liver hurts him : and he is able to drive mules wlikout swearing, that is Cora’s idea of Clarence’s wonderful accomplishments. The movie version of Tarkington's smart comedy follows closely thè stage version although thè movie ! gives much space to Cora's elopement with Hubert Stem. Of course I be- | lieve Ruth Gordon, who played thè •Cora role when thè comedy was presented at English's, thè best of thè Coras, but I sound no fault with thè silver screen edltion of Cora as presented by May McAvoy. Miss McAvoy does wonders with thè immense crying scene in thè office act. She also gives thè little flapper a splendid dose of thè grand and lofty fever, known as “puppy love.” Miss 'McAvoy’s Cora ls a smart characterizatlon. Reid as a Bug Hero Reid, in a soldier’s unlform, doesn’t look naturai, but when he puts on clvllian clothes he is not his naturai self. I llke Reid In this movie because he has not played thè Clarence role In a slap-stlck or “hoakum” manner. He seems to have a legitimate idea of Tarkington’s smart comedy values. At tlmes, Reid has forgotten himself and has given us a complete comedy characterizatlon. Robert Agnew at tlmes haa trouble in maklng Bobby Wheeler a human being. At tlmes he appears lost and then lmmediately redeems himself by I doing naturai and effective work.
