Martha Lee HER COLUMN

Martha Lw will tx elad to answer questiona of Time*’ reader* renard iug probìems of love, dotile and etiquette. For prnenai reptf. aend atamped. sei* addressed enverupe. question will he withheid frora publ'cation at thè writere’ rrquee*. Braina or beauty—whieh is more helpful to women? The question has been argued back and forth time aster time, and stili is unaswered. But I wonder why thè two need be separated. The idea that if a woman has beauty it naturally follows she is brainless has been exploded. And if she brains, and uses them, she knows better than to let brilli incy become too evident on some oi castone. And if she has brains. she should not have much trouble acquiring beauty—or something that will pass for it. On thè whole, it would seem that brains, judìclously used, would gire a woman an advantage. Answer to B. F. C.: Tou are in danger of becoming a “prude.” You “Just can not act silly” as other girl* do. so you ehut yourself up in a shell of disapprovai, and wonder whv your brains don’t. attraet people. "When in Rome, do as thè Romans do.” But you hold aloof. You are fortunate to be so brainy: but why not put those brains to work? Dress in style and don't be afrald to act "silly” once in a while. Your superlor attitude merely drives people away. You thought it would attraet thè "really worth while people.” But even they like attractive faces and prettiest clothes. You girla who stand back and coldly critiche thè actions of other young people do nothing to better conditions. Instead. you become “old maidish.” Far better if you would become part of thè world of these people and lift it to a higher piane. I do not mean that you should moralize; but that you should show, just bv your own actions. how easy it is to have a good time without going to thè extent those you criticize go. Answer to KATHRYN: 1. As soon as your hair is long enough to turn under at all, I believe you will find that by wearing a “switch” just in back, you will be able to hold your hair in place. Pin thè switch down and then twist it Just as you would twist your own hair. At first you may have to twist ìt before pinning it down, because there will be nothing to which you can pin it. I advise this method rather than that of wearing a wig or a false bob until your hair grows out. The more false hair you put on. thè slower your own hair will grow. You may be able to get along without any false hair: but most people flnd it impossible to keep thè stray ends in if they have nothing to which they can pin them. Answer to WORRIED: When you Tali in love, you won't have to ask any other person which Is thè “right" man. Nelther cf thè two who are va usi ng you so much worry is thè “right” one. Perhaps you wiil come to love one of them some tinte. Or you may fall in love with some one you have not inet yet. Xow, just i-ecause these two men have treatel you so well. and make love so well. you lmagine voj must love one of them. But you don't, or you would know which one.
