PLAY IS FORCEFUL ‘Haìry Ape ’ Masterpiece of Drama
Hi) WALTER D. HICKStAX Crash! The bones in thè big body of Yank Smith cracked in thè mighty grusp of a big hairy gorilla in a zoo. The last cry from thè troubled soul of thè big stoker is “What te it all about?” Ile thought ho “belonged’’ and that you and I just don’t belong. rhat's thè ending and thè tesson from K u gene O’Xeill's "The Hairy Ape,” which nude an Indianapolis a u die noe last § night think and shudder. I have previously .tpoken at length concerninent. ' ' Yank'" did possesa thè belief that he “belonged” right in thè engine rooni of thè a&SF' big ocean liner, WOL.IIUI.M but he conrtcmned thè others on thè promenade deck because they tlidn’t belong. That Yank felt he knew. When he began to think he couldn’t understand, but he was dead sure that he belonged. Yank lìegins to Think -Yt this tinte I want to eonsider th* work of Louis Wolheim as thè halfnaked stoker in thè engine rt>om of a -reat boat. Wolheim is thè “hairy ape" of thè title. In thè tìrst scene Vank Smith (Wolheim) te seen with thè members of thè engine-feeding gang in a dirty hold of a boat. The men are drinking and cursing. They are talking and living their own language. They tight. They swear and they hate. They are “animate.” but Vank preaehes his doctrine of strength. They make thè boat go. Don't they? They shovel coal inco thè hungry mou*hs r.f thè furnaces. They are doing soinething, but they are not .ninking. Out of thè din of thè curses and thè :toise in thè hole, Y’ank begins to hir.k. Y’ank teils thè bunch what he hinks of a man with “yellow” in his >l<>od. Kven thè other stokers who or.’t thir.k as Yank does "don’t be•ng.” They are yellow. Wolheim makes you see thè conir.g of thè mental tight. At times he -eems to brutally tear open thè very .oul of Y'ank Smith. Y'ou see this nan think and doubt, boast and wonler. Then he is “insulted” in thè enfine rooni of thè boat bv a society ri ri. She calls him a beast. Y'ank huris a shovel at her but nisses her pretty head. She "don't belong." Then revenge enters his trend of thought. He will invade Fifth Avenue and get that “dame” who had thè nerve to “bawl him out.”

ROYALTY ALICE TERRY Alice is of thè royal blood in “The Prisoner of Zenda.” She is thè Princess Flavia who puts her country above mere love for a man. She ls rery sweet and pretty in this movie, on view all next week at thè Ohio. So remarkable is Wolheim's conception of thè basic truths at work in Y'ank, that thè result is a masterpiece of acting which is one of thè few complete dramatic triumphs of thè modern stage. Wolheim is just as human in his way as O’Xeill. Wolheim has torn wide open thè mental inside of Y’ank and exposed it to thè world. Yank YY'ants to Know In thè scene where Y’ank attempts to become thè member of a certaln alleged society of destructlon, Yank ltarns he has "got ’em all wrong.” They don’t want wreekers in their membership. They are trying to educate thè masses. not make them wreekers, he learns, Y’ank is too l.ardboiled” for them and they throw him out of headquarters. Then Y'ank goes to thè zoo.

Surely thè big gorilla and Yank “belong.” But — Crash! Yank lies crushed, broken and fatally hurt in thè cage of thè gorilla. What is it all about? Doesn’t Y’ank belong? O’N'eiH’s Best I believe "The Hairy Ape” is thè l>est of all of O’NeiU’s writings. It is a masterpiece. So is thè acting | of Wolheim. Do not be afraid of either O’Neill jor Wolheim. Lise is reilected through and by them. | A masterful evening awaits you at ! thè Murat today and Saturday. The cast and production match up with thè strength of thè play.
