The American Government has entered into diplomatlc deliberatlons to determlne what can be done by thè United States to prevent a financial crash ili Europe. Almost constantly, exchanges aro passine back and forth between thè State Department in Washington and American ambassadors abroad. while conversations are ensuing here between Secretar}- of State Hughes and foreign ambassadors on thè serious situation in Europe in which thè old world apparcntly is looking to .his country' as a last hope. It is kr.own that thè question of thè possibility and advisability of a world eonference on economie rehabilitation and a reduction of land armaments to be sponsored by thè United States and to be held in Washington for settling this vast problem. is fìguring in these discussione. But. at present. it is ìmpossible to state with ' any certainty what thè final decision ; of this Government will be. One bet of $20,000 and numerous smaller but sizeable wagers have been made on thè chances of ‘'Al" Smith. Democrat, and Nathan L. Miller, Republican incumbent. In Democratic circles here, this trend in thè betting is regarded as favoring Smith whoee chance of Corning back against Miller was not too hlghly regarded in thè early stages of thè campaign.
