LEGiBNfITODDS with usuimi UMHPTH Efforts of Conservatives to Prevent Breach Ineffective When Sawyer Question Arises. POLITICAL MEANING SEEN Smoldering Resentment Against Harding Flames Forth at National Convention. By l'nited Press NEW ORLEANS, Oct. 20.—Despite efforts of conservative leaders. thè American Legion has co ino into open eontìiet with thè Administration on thè eve of a national election through its demanti for thè reniovai of Brigadier General Sawyt., chief co -orilinator of thè Federai hospitalizauon lioard. Added interest attaches hecause Sawyer is thè President's personal physician and lifelong friend. Rank and file of thè legion got up on their legs in convention ThurstL. v and ran away from thè leaders, who had been followed docilely. It was thè first time thè convention had not voted yes without debate on anything suggested to it. ( ause for thè Revolt The cause fcr thè revolt was thè conciliatory attitude of thè rehabilitation committee of thè legion towar-1 Sawyer. This committee presente*: its report. in which was a resolution declaring that thè legion "has tentatively accepted thè statement of Brigadier General Sawyer as a pleilfeo ihat he will cooperate whole-heartedly with thè committee in matters aft'ecting hospltaiization. "The legion accepts for thè time being thè pledge of cooperation given by Brigadier General Sawyer in thè hope that it will be carried out by hirn in spirit as well as in letter,” thè resolution read, adding that thè committee would maintain its "constructivcìy criticai” attitude toward thè Government. Yeterans had expected some criticism of Sawyer. because they blanie fcim for deluy in thè erection pitals. They objecied to thè "armistlce.” which A. A. Sprague of Chicago, chairman of thè permanent rehabilitation committee. had patched up. They were nettled, too, because thè convention’s committee, a temporary and interlocking body of which Col. Rise Means of Denver was chairman, had discarded a dozen resoiutions criticising Sawyer. G. S. Burron. young State commander of Minnesota, start ed thè fireworks by moving to aniend tiie report with a resolution which bitterly de r.ounced Sawyer and demanded his removaL The convention debated prò and con for two hours in tunnoil, and fir.ally adopted thè resolution 601 to 275. Means. as chairman, argud more could be obtained through cooperation and committee members supported hirn, including Sprague. King’s Impassioned Atfacls Delegate Stafford King of Minnesota threw thè convention into an uproar with an impassioned attack on Sawyer in which he said men were dying like fiies 'n this country. “\Ye must bave those hospitals,” King said. “The fac.t cannot be argued. We have a man in Washington w ■> has all thè responsibility. He has had two years to do something and has done nothing. Now. he has promised again and we come in here and are hoodwinked with another falsiiication.” Watson Miller of thè District of Columbia, said thè last thin>’ he did before he cani" to thè convention he eaiìed on Sawyer, and thè latter said: "Honest to Gcd I am with you. I bave made mmy mistakes: my letter wrlting has been untactful, but I am with you.” T. J. Brady of New York jclned in
thè attack. Gilbert Bettman, State commander of Ohio, based his argument against removal or thè theory that it would he futile to demand it. “What if Harding does not remove Sawyer, where are me?” he asked. Cries carne from all pai'.? of che hall. “Then wa’ll remove Harding.” “Hardin, even trusted thè lise of bis wife to Sawyer,” Bettman shouted during thè uproar. This was greeted with hisses. bcos and shouts of “sìt down, sit down.” and later, when Bettntlan sald if Harding didn’t comply it would be a s'ap in thè face of thè legion, there was another demonstratton. Aaron Saplro of California replied to Bettman by saying thè legion had entrusted thè Uvee of 300,000 disabled men to Sawyer. “Washington can’t do any worse to uc than they have this nasi year,” he argued. There v ere other arguments against thè resolution, but thè tide could uot be vtamnted. sprague had sown well thè seeds of dissatisfaction with Sawyer in thè rows he had with him in recent rnonths. And it was ironica! that Sprague, ttilhough now supporting Sawy er in thè belief that he has signed *‘On thè dotteil line,” could not turn back thè tide. There is one story that thè whole trouble Degan when Sawyer promised a hospital to Sprague months ago for his home State of Illinois, and later ot thè behest of Michigan politicians, doctors, and legionnaires, gare it to Michigan. At ieast Michigan showen irs gratitude for thè hospital it got by voting solidly for Sawyer. Xew York secondeil thè resolution for removal. New York is thè home State df William F. Deegan, most uetive candidate for legion commander whose chief politica! medicine has been attacks on Sawyer and forces. As a consequence thè condemnation of Sawyer is counted on by Deegan supporterà to aid his candidacy. An analysis of thè vote, however, indicates thè delegates cast their ballots without regard for thè national ccmmandership and without regard for national politics. It seenied simply a vote against Sawyer, and thè administration of thè hospitalization program. The vote wasn't sectional and thè pleas of leaders had little welght. lowa, home State of Commander MacXlder, who was opposed to thè resolution for removai, split ita vote.
