The famed “little red schoolhouse” j would compare favorably with some j ! of £he buildings used as schools in , | Indianapolis. At school No. 8, Winter anrl Bloycl ! Aves., a Times reporter found two j ! frame houses being used for the 1 fourth, fifth and sixth grades. In the larger building, electric | lights are used all day. New lights, with frosted bulbs, were installed Saturday. Some of the children who go to school in this building have been forced to wear glasses because of the poor lighting, it was learned. | The buildings have not been j painted, inside or out, for about four years. The walls are black with soot from the stoves which heat the rooms. Behind the stove in one room, the paint is off the wall. Smoke from the chimney of the smaller building blows over into the larger building, according ♦o children who attend school there. At times 1 the smoke is so heavy that the j windows in the schoolroom have to! be closed.
Two portable buildings also are in ■ use at this school, beside a per- , roanent brick building. Light can be j seen through cracks in the walls yf I the portables. In winter, the wind I blows through these cracks. School No. 38 is to have anew building. according to the school board program. FERDINAND CROWNED 1 Ceremony Staged After Long Delay Due to World War.
