REPAIR EXPENSES ARE LESS, WHILE WORKJSEREATER Street Maintenance Economies Shown in Engineer Elliott's Latest Report. The city asphalt repair department has made approximately one-third more street patches so far this year than in all of 1921 at approximately one-half the cost for labor, City Civil Engineer John L. Elliott announced today. Last year about 500 tons of asphalt were used in street repairs." So far this year approximately 700 tons have been used, not to mention old asphalt which has been worked over for small patches in cold weather, I an innovation this year. Elliott said the department has i spent on materials to date 148,000. Last year $55,430 was the cost. For salaries and wages this year j $32,000 has been spent, as compared i with $63,462.32 last year. The total | labor cost this year will approximate $35,000, Elliott estimated. The wage t rate was the same both years. For salaries and wages at the city asphalt plant the cost this year has been $11,355 and probably will be $13,000 for the year. Last year it was $14,188. Until this year asphalt repair has been in charge of the street commissioner. The Shank administration had it changed to the engineering department so trained engineers could supervise. Elliott said he planned to keep one gang of asphalt repairmen working until Dec. 1, and probably one brick and block street gang until Jan. 1. The Wandering Jew has ceased his journeyings; but the itinerant piccolo player has come to take his place, according to Captain Wilson of the local army recruiting station. Yesterday, according to the captain, Thomas Bartholemew Connelly, who insisted upon the Bartholemew, made his appearance at the station and desired to enter the service as a piccalo player In one of Uncle Sam’s Army bands. Connelly played his instrument during the World War, and upon receiving his discharge migrated to India. At Calcutta he fell In with some dusky Hindu musicians. American jazz w T as Introduced and Connelly joined the chirp of his piccolo to the exotic strains In the country where the wall of the snake charmer's fife had been the only music for centuries.

Harold Stapp, night man at the case prevented the men from gaining entrance. Stapp Is the man who fought with the hold-up man during a robbery last week. The hold-up man was shot by the police.
