HIGHWAY PARKING FALLSUNDER BUN Highway Commission Calls for Close Attention to Manner of Leaving Cars. Parking automobiles on the pavement of narrow State highways Is exceedingly annoying and dangerous and should be eliminated in view of greatly Increased automotive travel. In the opinion of State highway officials. The commission has authorized district engineers and superintendents to watch for machines parked on narrow roads, and instructed them to take the matter up with the owners. A. H. Hinkle, superintendent of maintenance for the State highway commission, points out that frequently machines are parked on both sides of country roads so as to block traffic or, at the best to permit only one way traffic through tHo narrow lane between. This is custom/iry, he says, in front of country churches, picnic grounds, baseball grounds and pleasure resorts. The State highway commission is placing State roads In condition for allseason traffic, and asks the public, the users of these highways 4n preference to country roads, to cooperate in making traffic safer for every one. Mr. Hinkle points out that everyone who is forced to park a machine on a heavily traveled highway, should bear in mind the danger to which theauto is subjected. Not only is there danger to any party wishing to pass, but also to the car that is parked. The highway commission contemplates erection of signs near all ball parks, public parks and resorts, warning against parking cars on the pavement. Do You Know Your Child*s Classmates? SHOW MISSES MARK 'New Prosperity' Is Sad Attempt
By WALTER D, BICKMAN I 'Hello, Prosperity," is one of the 1 saddest attempts to entertain I have ! ever run across. It landed at Eng- | lish’s last night for a three-day engagement. It bears a deadly resem | biance to the Marcus show of last : season. That doesn't help it. This show is not for large city theaters. Asa $2 show it hasn't any claim for consideration. The book, if there is one, is mighty dull. Harry L. Cooper is announced as the "inimitable comedian” on the program I For the life of me I can't understand why any one would want to attempt | to imitate him in the material he uses In this show. One of the men in the company, while singing a song attempts to be funny by placing his finger to his nose in a suggestive manner. It’s about time this sort of thing stopped on the American stage. It is not comedy, It is disgusting. Near the close of the first act a male singer informs the audience, in song, that prosperity will sure be here If beer and light wines return. Such "sentiment” received slight applause. Bad taste again is displayed in a scene called "The End of a Perfect' Day,” in which Cooper plays a souse. Althea Barnes really attempts to do something in a song line. She is at her best while singing “The Small Town Girl.” She again lifts the show to a higher level while singing "Those Songs My Mother Used to Sing.” The bfst number of the entire show is contributed by George TillinghasL who j plays a xylophone solo in the orchestra pit. Some of the costumes are: pretty. None of the scenes are elab-| orate. "Hello Prosperity” is on view today, and Saturday at English's. • • • On View Today The folio-wine attractions are on 1 view today: "Hello Prosperity" at English's; Irene Franklin at Keith's; j COCKTAILS Anger Barmaids LONDON, Oct. 13.—English bar- | maids are rapidly becoming tabid i anti-Americans. The seductive cocktail is at fault, i In the good old days, since "Bluff King | Hal” quaffed his nut-brown ale and: Falstaff had his "bitters' from a pew ter mug, the barmaid was an English ; Institution. She was perfectly capable j of drawing ale from the Lap and serv-1 ing it over the bar. or even measuring 1 out a “wee nip" of Scotch. ■ Things have changed and thirsts have changed. The Americans have brought the cocktail habit to lA>ndon, inasmuch as they are not permitted to exercise this habit in their native land. Much as the English dislike the adoption of American methods and customs, they have taken to the cocktail. Palate has conquered over j mind. The cocktail Is an established institution in England.
