ROBERTS QUITS CIGAR Appears in *The Old Homestead 9

By WALTER D. HICKMAy Gosh! O Gosh! I have discovered one movie in which Theodore Roberts doesn’t smoke a single cigar. He doesn’t even touch a pipe. He is ableolutely smokeless. This happens in a movie version of “The Old Homestead," a melodrama which our mothers and fathers enjoyed years ago. Mr. Roberts wears a funny set of whiskers as Uncle Joshua, the real hero of the story. Uncle Josh hails from the farm, but is as honest as the day is long. Uncle Josh and his family down on the farm go through a peck of trouble, but the sun finally shines. I have just seen a private screening of the "homestead,” and Roberts is a genius with or without a figar. His knowledge of comedy situations helps him tc make Uncle Josh a real character. The whole picture is good melodrama and it is acted in a melo key. At times it had me on the edge of my seat and then I was lounging back howling with laughter at Roberts. At the Ohio next week. -I- -I- -I“The Rubicon” Booked Estelle tV.nwood arrives at English’s Monday night for a three-day engagement in "The Rubicon," by Edouard Bourdet This play was both praised and condemned in Chicago and New York. It concerns the sex problem. .;. + -jThe "Bird” Again "The Bird of Paradise” lands again at the Murat Monday night for its annual engagement. This time it is for three days. Ann Reader, who was j BLuana last year, has the same role. ii- -iOn View Today The following attractions are on view today: Irene Franklin at Keith's; “Hello Prosperity,” a musical extravaganza, at English's: anniver sary vaudeville at the Lyric, "Echoes of Broadway” at the Shubert-Park, musical comedy at the Rialto, burlesque at the Broadway, "Love Is an Awful Thing" at the Apollo. "The Bond Boy’’ at the Circle, “Honor First” at Mister Smith’s, “The Won derful Chance’’ at the Isis, “The Five-. Dollr • Baby" at the Ohio, “Pink Gods" at the Colonial and a triple bill at the Regent. Silver Tricorn One of the most stunning bits of millinery imported from Paris is a tricorn of silver cloth draped with 1 a full veil of Chantilly lace.
