RALSTON ATTACKS BEVERIDGE UPON FOUR POWER PACT G. 0. P. Candidate Assailed for Silence Relative to Peace Treaty. By Times Special
RICHMOND. Ind., Oct. s—James! M. Cox. former Governor of Ohio and ' Democratic presidential nominee in the last election, made his first ad= dress in the State in the present campaign here last night. Samuel M. Ralston, the Democratic candidate for Senator,, was another speaker at the rally. Before the speeches a parade ■was held. “It will not be denied that, the present Administration, by the sheer force of events, is placed at the very outset on the defensive,” Mr. Cox said. “The surest proof of the grave situation, insofar as it involves the Administration, is the appearance of Elihu Root as the chief counsel for the defense. His services have been enlisted by the old guard within his party upon many occasions when emergency was at hand." Beveridge Attacked In his address, Mr. Ralston attacked Albert J. Beveridge, his opponent, for keeping silent on the four-power pact. “Mr. Beveridge up to this time has lei'used to give out a public utterance m favor of the four-power pact, and-i am not criticizing him for not doing it. knowing his convictions, as I think I do, on international questions. He cannot support the pact unless he stultifies himself, gnd this he will not do. “And I am insisting that he has no right under the circumstances to say that he is indorsing the record ot the Harding Administration or wholly supporting it.” Discusses Ad imson Law By Times Special LAFAYETTE, Ind., Oct. s.—Albert J. Democratic argument that this Nation will be unable to sell to other nations becuuse the tariff makes it impossible for us to buy of them. This theory he said, is false, as shown by the records. Criticizes Foreign Affairs FT. WAYNE, Oct. s.—George H. Moses. United States Senator from New Hampshire, made a plea, for the election of Albert J. Beveridge to the Senate, by Indiana voters, in November, at a Republican rally here last night. Moses argued that the wisdom of the Republican party's position on international affairs had been demonj strated since the defeat of ex-Presi-j dent Wilson, whose conduct of foreign I affairs he severely criticized.
