LUMBER TIDE ENJOYS EIOUITH Industry Settling Down After Two Years of Uncertainty. The lumber industry has experienced exasperating vicissitudes during the past two years is the opinion expressed by Ross S. Hill Jr. of the Indianapolis Lumber Company. “The country saw the most rapid decline from the heights of dizzy inflation to the depths of discouraging depression,” he said. “Within twelve months following the spring of 1920 mill prices of lumber declined more rapidly than they had advanced during the precedmg three years. “Now there art nmistakable signs that the skies are aritig, but there are some diacouragl aspects to the situation, not the leas, * which is the lack of knowledge on l. - part of the public regarding difficulties confronting the lumber Industry at this time. "There is no vocation more honorable than the lumber profession. From time immemorial the lumber dealer has been home builder. And his work and duties have expanded to a point w here it Is getting more and more common for him to supply plans and even specifications for homes. “It is perfectly true that he frequently has been misunderstood and has the object of misrepresentation. He has been accused of profiteering and was accused not many years ago of being part of a gigantic trust. The very fact, however, that lumber fluctuates so widely in price precludes the possibility of any combination of manufacturers. Frequently lumber at the mill is sold at an actual loss. This lowest price the public is apt to accept as the normal price and to bring a storm of protest to bear when any advance is made beyond this minimum.

"Recent reports would indicate that in larger communities construction Is on the increase while in smaller ones it still is stagnant. The only reason given for this peculiar condition is that there is an air of uncertainty in rural districts regarding what the price of lumber will be in the immediate future. “In Indianapolis the activity has been unusually great. In fact this city has been one of the leaders in the entire country in this respect, and the city has enjoyed a building boom unprecedented in its history. “This t ndoubtedly was the result of the lack of building activity during the war when labor was diverted into war material work and construction came to a standstill, resulting in a house shortage which still exists to a great extent despite all efforts to abolish ■>it by an unprecedented outburst of building. ADVISES SMALL PURCHASES Three-Ton Coal Limit for Domestic I'ses Favored by Dealer. Three-ton coal purchases for domestic consumption until coal production and distribution have returned to something approaching normal conditions is the recommendation made by Henry L. Dithmer, secretarytreasurer of the Polar Ice and Fuel Company. “Mines will be able to produce sufficient coal for domestic consump-

surveyor would get his standard time by wire from the nearest large city. From this difference in time he would calculate his distance from the known point. But in cases where the men have had no means of communication they have taken along high-grade watches or chronomeeters keeping Greenwich time. After a long, hard trip even the chronometers would err for the difference of about _ a minute from the

tion,” Dithmer said, “but the whole matter hinges upon the ability of railroads to furnish oars In which to haul It from the mines. There is no supply at present for domestic use i except a few relatively small ship- ; ments received from Indiana mines. •‘So uncertain is the situation now i that it is impossible to foretell with : any degree of certainty what condt i tions will be in the Immediate future. Dealers are afraid to lay In 1 large stocks for fear of entire changes n conditions. “The situation is complex in the extreme. During the long summer months there practically was no buying of coal, and wise householders who for years pat have filled thc-ir coal bins during the summer, now find themselves without a lump in the house. This, of course, Is prefectly natural, and is the result of the unusually situation resulting from the coal strike. This means that there will be a necessity for purchasing within a very short time. "Any one can see that if a flood of domestic consumers rush into the mar ket with their orders at one time there would be great confusion, and it would be impossible for dealers to fill their orders. ' The advice of the Polar Ice and Fuel Company to householders Is to lay in a small supply of coal now. This wil take the strain off the immediate necessities of the consumer’s situation, and at the same time will not result in a coal famine due to over demand. To avoid coal shortages a little later it would be good policy for consumers to buy a small amount of coal at present, but not an entire winter's supply “Industries of the Nation are now in need of large supplies of steam coal, such as mine run. and It is probable that the first efforts of thi* mines will be concentrated on the production of as much of this kind of fuel as possible. In several weeks domestic coal will begin to arrive in larger quantities, providing, of course, that the supply of cars is adequate.” JUNK METAL MADE NEW Damaged Auto Parts Easily Restored by Modem Science. No longer Is It necessary to junk old. battered and damaged metal au tomobile parts, according to Thomas S Markey, president of the Guarantee Metal Enameling Company of this city. "Contrary to the generally accepted idea prevalent In the motor world, r rumpled parts are easily repaired and renewed." President Markey said. “In fact, under modern conditions and with the wonderful machinery designed and built for this especial purpose, tho renewing can now be done so perfectly that even the mo torist who owns the car cannot tell

exact time. A minute’s difference meant an error of several miles in their calculations. That is why radio is being depended on now for a more accurate survey of this district. the difference between a renewed and j brand new piece of metal. “Asa matter of fact, for example, we can take a damaged fender and make it just as good as new, no mat ter how badly battered It Is when it comes into our shop. Thousands of dollars' worth of perfectly serviceable metal are thus saved from the junk heap and kept In service. This re suits In a great economic saving in a big sense as well as big saving to the individual motorist. “Many times autoists have come to cur shop with crumpled fenders and expressed the utmost distrust of our ability to do anything with them Ther. when they came back n day or two later they have been dum founded at the results obtained by us and many times we have heard the opinion expressed that we had sub stituted new fenders for the damaged ones originally brought in to us. "An Interesting fact in this connection is that machinery for doing this work was developed wholly through necessity. There never had been any need of such machinery before, but once the demand for it arose, someone appeared tot Invent It I am referring particularly here to a process for removing baked enamel quickly and without damage fn the nietal itself in a few hours. For years this was a thing regarded ns impossible of accomplishment. But the process was evolved and by using It It is possible for us to give thirty-six hour service on sheet tnetal enamel work.” Circular Slips Since circular skirts have become the vogue, slips have followed suit, and some of the newest ones are circular and are mounted on longwaisted bodices.

CLASS COMPANY ADDSTO PLANT Demand for Product Necessitates Greater Facilities. For the second time in the past few weeks the Indianapolis Glass Company had purchased an addition to its plant. Parker S. James, manager of the company, has announced the purchase of the Hoosier Glass Company plant and equipment at McCarty and Fnion Sts. Recently the company took over the interests of the local branch of the Kawneer Company of Niles, Mich , which for more than six years was engaged in the specialty of store front installation. When the Kawneer Company was taken over the services of J. F. Hirt, who had been with the old company, were retained to assist in store front construction. ”In the near future our company will either erect a building adjoining opr location at 1002 Kentucky Ave or will obtain quarters near the Hoosier Glass Company plant,' Manager James said ’This new addition to our concern will have the effect of practically doubling our capacity for automobile glass. The purchase was made necessary by the unexpected and rapid increase in the volume oi our business Included in the plant which we purchased are fifteen beveling machines, which will be a great addition to our present equipment Although existing orders are suffi dent to provide enough automobile and beveling work for sixty days, we nre striving to increase the ca paclty of our plant in order to take care of the steady growth in demand. ••New orders are coming in with surprising rapidity. The month of ! August recorded a large increase over duly, and so far this month our business has been about four times as great ns It was for a corresponding period in 1921. “Trade from automobile factories continues to be the largest single item, although mirror work and store front construction continue to display a great dealspf activity. These mirrors may be made In a variety of designs and are greatly used in beautifying homes, theaters and public buildings of various kinds.
