VETERAN HOTEL Ml RETURNS ‘Billy’ Holt Becomes Manager of Spink - Arms Hotel. News that William Holt, better known throughout the State as "Billy,” has returned to Indianapolis a manager of the Spink-Arms, was the occasion of no little good feeling among members of the traveling public. "We feel that we are particularly fortunate In obtaining Mr. Holt,” E. G. Spink, president of the E. G. Spink Company, owner of the Spink-Arms, said. He has been intimately connected with the hotel business in Indianapolis for so many years that he knows the needs and wants of the traveling public as well as any man in the State. Formerly he managed at different times the old Bates House, Grand Hotel and Denison Hotel in this city and the Fowler Hotel at Lai fayette. - “Complete settlement of the receivership proceedings in which the Spink- j Arms was involved, has been made. The receivership was closed last Friday and Mr. Holt, who acted as receiver. immediately became manager, i Settlement was made with the old j management, all creditors will l>e paid in full by the E. G. Spink Company, : which will be the only, party inter- - ested in the management from this time forth. "The annex, completed last April, gives us 275 rooms, the majority of which are arranged for housekeeping suites, but this will in no way interfere with the conduct of the hotel for all members of the traveling public, regardless of the shortness of their stay. "We also are bringing to completion three apartment buildings presenting a total valuation of $1,255,000. All of these are being erected in residential districts of Indianapolis. The Pennsylvania apartment at 1433 N. Pennsylvania Kt., will be ready for occupancy Oct. 1. this apartment house contains tin suites and is six stories in height, the lower floor will contain no apartments but will be given over to; a lounging room and cafeteria. It will i cost about $400,000. "The Jefferson apartment building. 230 E. Pratt St., contains about seventy small apartments and will be ready about Nov. 1. This building will represent an Investment of approximately $350,000. "The Penn-Arts apartment hotel. Sixteenth and Pennsylvania Sts., will be ready Feb. 1, 1923. It will cost about $500,000 and contain eighty apartments. On the first floor will be located a drug store, beauty parlor, case and lounge. The upper five floors will be devoted to apartments. "There seems to be a tendency on the part of the average person toward the apartment hotel. Combining as it does all the advantages of a hotel with the possibility of being arranged to the taste of the individual it has become very popular. A kitchenette is part of every apartment and a regular hotel dining room operated." CARE OF FURNACES VITAL Coal Shortage Makes Heating Plant Attention Necessary. whole situation. Both France and Great Britain are vitally concerned in seeing that such a union of former enemy countries is not effected. In this purpose the allies are looking out not only for their own interests but for the interests of the “little entente,” which, touching upon Bulgaria, could not quietly permit a junction of the Bulgars and the Turks,
preparation for the campaign against winter, Is the opinion expressed by no less an authority than Harry Rybolt, president of the Rybolt Heating Company. “Far too many home owners put off I giving their heating plants attention until the very last minute,” Mr. Rybolt said. “This is a great mistake. In the first place, by taking up the matter now before the rush season sets in the furnace owner is assured of the very highest degree of serviceas the furnace experts are not crowded beyond their capacity as they will be a little later. “Another reason why unusual care should be taken to get heating plants in the very best condition is that this winter there is bound to be a coal shortage due to the recent strike and as a result coal prices will be abnormally high. This means that a furnace not in the very best of condition is going to be a mighty costly thing to operate for a furnace in need of repair is a furnace which will eat up fuel at an alarming rate, while the same heating plant, if In good condition, will conserve fuel and save dollars for the owner. "This Item of heating plant offl clency long recognized as of vital importance in the industrial life of a city and receiving the care of the very beat qualified experts in large plants has been overlooked, strange to j say, by home owners. This is a great mistake, for the same principles and factors which apply to fuel con servation in large plants apply with ! equal force in the small home heat j Ing system. “Home owners remember that proper installation is the secret of furi naee success. Many a high-grade furnace has been rendered incapable of good service through second-rate installation. In putting in anew furnace householders should keep this fact well in mind and employ only qualified experts in this particular line of work. “Our company has been in business for many years ami there are few problems of beating engineering with which we have not become fa ; miliar in the past few years. Asa reI suit we employ only the highest grade (of expert furnace workmen, and any one making use of our serve can depend upon being given a job thorough- ! ly satisfactory to them. Our long line | of old customers, who have stuck to us over a period of years, and the I constantly increasing list of new pa- ; irons, shows that Indianapolis has j been more than satisfied ivltn .tie | service the Itybolt Heating Company i has been giving.”
[ND DF STRIKES ! BOOH BUSIES Lumber Trade Feels Effect Immediately. According to Dealer. Clearing tip of the general business situation due to the settlement of the rail and coal strikes will result in a great betterment of the lumber business, according to 11. B. Burnet, presl j dent of the Burnet-Binford Lumber I Company, 1401 TV. Thirtieth St. "Clearing up of the coal arid rail strikes has assisted the lumber husi ness in that more building will be started. It has helped the cement j situation more directly and may re suit in a possible shortage of this mu j terial being averted. Lumber prices 1 still are firm, although there have
with its resultant menace to the Balkans. France, with a mandate over Syria, jutting off to the southeast from Nationalist Turkey, was anxious to preserve the friendship of the Turks and extended aid to them. On the other hand, England, with a mandate over Mesopotamia, due east of Smyrna and with no border contact with Nationalist Turkey, was concerned that Tur-
oeen advances in a few lines. Indications point to few other changes dur.ng the remainder of the building season,” he said. The situation at present is summed up by the American Lumberman of Chicago as follows: “The demand for lumber is brisk and exceeds the supply offered by the producers. Lumber manufacturers are very cautious about booking orders because the movement of bulky freight is becoming more restricted and it is more difficult to obtain empty freight cars for lumber loading. On the Pacific coast rains have greatly lessened the danger from the forest fires with the result that log production has increased and in turn manufacturers have .ncreased the sawing of lumber. Offsetting this is the fact j i that the car supply is becoming more and more scanty on the Pacific coast, with the result that movement of lumber by rail is being cut down, particularly at the mills which are located on small roads and branch lines. In the South likewise the car situation is anything hut good. Even where cars are obtained and loaded they move very slowly, with the result that comparatively little lumber is reaching the consuming market, j "This undoubtedly Is having the j effect of stimulating the demand. In 1 other words, some purchasers will place orders in several places and j take a chance on cancelling the remainder after one order Is received. Also a certain element represented j maong the buyers as bidding strongly | lor stock. This element does not \ represent the rank and file of the luni | her trade, however, for there is a distinct tendency to take . are of the old customers and not auction off stock. "Prices t.re advancing ns they always do when orders exceed the supply, but leading lumbermen are very hopeful of preventing a runaway market which would, m the end, work injury to themselves as well as to the consumer.” BUY HOMES GN PAYMENT PU 85 Per Cent of Indianapolis Property Bought in This Manner. j key did not' attempt to extend her powers eastward. Hence, England, supported Greece, at least nominally. In the latter's efforts to get a foothold in Asia, through Snjyrna as a base. The treaty of Serves, designed to effect a definite understanding among the allies and Turkey in Asia, was i never ratified by any of the powers j but nevertheless, accentuated the feelI ing between France and Great Britain.
early stages of the development of mankind was the desire of ownership, is the opinion expressed by John A. Rovse, president of the Royse-Borch-ert Company, 603 City Trust building. “Primitive man from the very first found in his heart a desire to own for himself the little plot of ground on which he lived. It might be only a cave on the river bank, a barren hiding place on a bleak mountain syle. but it was his, and this instinct has come dawn with undying force to the present day,” Mr. Royae said. “With the growth of population and i changing economic conditions it became harder and harder to acquire possession, but the instinct still persisted. Under present conditions it is not possible for many persons to go out and lay down spot cash for a home, but that need not deter them from realizing their ambition In this respect.” “It was to meet just such a situation and to satisfy just such a demand that our company was organized. For by our system of home building we make it possible for people to own their own homes, paying for them from time to time just as they pay rent. In some instances we have been able to build homes for as little as S3OO cash down and on payments of ! $25 each month. This, to my way of thinking, is a tremendous benefit to a community. Not only does It enable ambitious families to attain their ambition of owning their homes, but it brings into Indianapolis capital from throughout the entire State and outside places as well. “One of the healthiest conditions that a community can possibly find itself In is to have a large percentage |of home owners These people make j the very finest class of citizens and form tho real backbone of the community.” "In the old days there was a very unwise prejudice in existence against buying homes on the payment plan, but that old idea is now obsolete and statistics will show that 85 per cent of all property sold in Indianapolis is handled on the payment, plan. “Householders are realizing more and more that ft salable equity is worth a whole baaketfull of rent re eeipts. “The growth of our company is proof positive of the services wo have been able to give Indianapolis. This is true because no concern can stay in business any length of time and grow unless there Is a demand for what it is producing. Our concern started in a modest, small way and during the past year its assets have grown more than $100,000.”
