COUNCIL SHUCKS ACTION OF COURT EXTENDING ORDER Labor Leaders Say Strike Injunction Is Directed to Intimidation. -AY OUT MORE CONVENIENT fen-Day Extension Regarded Government Opportunity to Correct Error. By United .V etcß ) ATLANTIC CITY. N. J., Sept. 13. Federal Judge J. H. Wilkerson's decision to extend the temporary injunction against the railway shopmen for ten days was declared “a method to intimidate the strikers into a settlement,” in a statement issued by the executive council of the American Federation of Labor in session here. “The decision caused no surprise,” the statement said, “and the extension of it for ten days Is looked upon as embracing a doubt in the mind of Judge Wilkerson as to the legality of the decree as originally framed and his hope that a settlement may be effected between the railway shopmen's union and many of the railroads by the time the ten days will have elapsed. In that way affording both him and the Government a convenient method of getting out of an unwarranted position.” The council’s general plant to aid the strikers will be announced in a few days, according to the Statement. This plan is to raise funds to carry on the strike either by voluntary contributions or by a levy on all members of the federation. There Is no prospect of a general strike, the leaders said, the unions basing their hopes largely on the public sentiment in their favor as a result of the Daugherty injunction. In line with its announced intention of ridding the federation of “bores from within.” the executive council approved the action of President Gompers in removing the charter and causing the reorganization of the Bookkeepers, Stenographers and Accountants’ Union of New York City because of alleged radical action by its membership. “The federation will follow a similar course in all local and Federal trade unions that are being used by many as a means of personal gain,” it was stated. The council announced intention to join with the Workers' education Bureau to promote -education for adult

Wine Put Out; Grape Juice Is Used Instead By United News PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 13. Amendment of the ritual of the Episcopal Church to permit both clery and laity to conform to the dictates of their conscience by substitution of grape juice for wine in the office of holy communion was asked in a petli tion presented to the house of bishops ; at the forty-seventh triennial convention of the church here Tuesday by Bishop Joseph H. Johnson of Los j | Angeles, Cal. Bishop Johnson requests that priests and communicants to whom •’this subject has become a question of conscience” be allowed the option to use "the unfermented fruit of the vine.” ' workers denied earlier opportunities. It proposes to organize trade union courses in every city and to ask professional teachers to join in the movement. MAY APPEAL LEVIES Farmers Have Right to Petition Tax Board for Adjustments.
