Minor caused the downfall of the Greek Cabinet. Caloghropoulos was charged today by King Constantine with the task of forming anew one. Reports persist that Constantine may be driven from the throne. By United Press CONSTANTINOPLE, Sept 8 American marines have landed at Smyrna and are taking steps to protect United States citizens as the Turkish Nationalist army, driving defeated Greeks before it, nears this city, according to reports reaching here today. Greek authorities are said to have informed the allies they are unable to guarantee the safety of foreigners in Smyrna when the routed Greek army reaches the port city. American and allied detachments disembarked to guard the consulates. Within Twenty Miles of Smyrna The victorious Turks under MusKemal had pushed forward to within about twenty miles of Smyrna at latest reports, and had broken through the last weak defenses and reached the Aegean Sea. The Greek army, routed, was retreating upon Smyrna, according to reports, accompanied by thousands of refugees. Dangerous congestion, with spread of disease and famine, is feared in Smyrna. SWALLOWS ACID Sylvester Miller Kills Himself After Trying to Shoot His Wife. By Times Special MUNCIK. Ind., Sept B.—Sylvester Miller, 35, laborer, attempted to shoot his wife today and then committed suicide by taking carbolic- acid. Miller had been released from jail a short time before. DECLARES ITS ANARCHY Anti-Saloon League Secretary Talks on Prohibition Opposition. By Times Special RICHMOND, Ind., Sept. B.—S. Edgar Nicholson, secretary of the antisaloon league, in making a report to the prohibition board at the Five Tears meeting of Friends here declared that opposition to prohibition is little short of anarchy. COUPLE ROBBED Leopold Kohls, Theater Manager, Says Hold-up Takes Watch. Leopold Kohls, Seville Apartments, 1701 N. Illinois St., manager of the ' Circle theater, reported to police today that he and a young woman companion were held up and robbed by a negro at a lonely spot on the Michigan road, near White river last ! night. Kohls told police who investigated, j $25 and a watch were taken from him and a wrist watch from the woman, who was known to him as Miss Brown. ' BOUND UP OF 38 NAMED 111 HERRIN MINE MASSACRE Indictments Returned for Murder by Grand Jury Being Served. By United Press MARION. 111., Sept. B.—Round-up of Herrin massacre participants was under way today in Williamson County. With the return of thirty-eight indictments by the special grand jury late yesterday", each charging murder. The first arrest was made by Sheriff Thaxton when he took Into custody Philip Fontanetta, a miner of Marion. Others arrested last night were Leva Mann, miner of Herrin; Charles Rogers, Herrin miner, and James Brown, negro deputy of Colp, 111. All were placed in Jail. NEGRO KILLS BOY Youth Is Awakened From His Sleep and Shot. By Times Spe.cial MICHIGAN CITY, Ind., Sept. B. Ferdinand Ridgbird, 19, was shot and instantly killed today when two negroes held up him and his brother, John, of Wisconsin, on the Michigan highway east of here. The boy was asleep. One of the negroes kicked him and shot him just above the heart. John was robbed of S3OO, he told the police. THIEVES LOOT HOME William H. Rockwood Reports Robbery Loss Not Determined. Thieves ransacked and looted the home of William M. Rockwood, 102 E. Sixteenth St., the police were told today. The robbery is believed to have occured while the family was away frcm home between 7 and 10 o'clock last night. Seek Missing Boy The police are searching for Allen Wolsley, 17, of 140 N. Keallng Ave. He disappeared from his home yesterday.
AERONAUT SMITH TRAILS MATNARD IN FRO DEATH Parachute Fails to Open When Balloonist Makes Spectacular Leap. By United Press RUTHLAND, Vt„ Sept. B.—The body of Lieut. Be’vtn W. Maynard, the “flying parson” who was killed with two other men when his airplane crashed to the ground while "stunt flying” at the State fair here, was on its way to Maynard, N. C. today. Maynard, Lieut. L. R. Wood of Tinconderoga and mechanic Charles Minoelie of Plattsburg, were in the big plane and had performed several stunts before trying a tail spin at 2,000 feet. The plane, lacking sufficient space, did a nose dive into a corn field and all three of the men were almost instantly killed. , While rescuers were still clearing away the wreckoge of Maynard’s plane, Henry A. Smith, a Boston aeronaut, fell to instant death when j his parachute failed to open in his third spectacular leap of the day. STILL IS CONFISCATED Two Greeks Arrested on Blind Tiger Charge. In a raid on the Arnold farm, seven miles north of tho city, last night, the sheriff, police and Federal officers found a complete whisky plant with a capacity of eighty gallons. Two men were arrested on charges of operating a blind tiger. They gave their names as John Poulos and Jack Mitchell. Both are Greeks. A third man escaped. AGED MASON DIES Death of J. F. B.—Hope of rescuing the forty-seven entombed miners from the depths of the Argonaut gold diggings virtually died today. Blasts heard by the working crews, at first thought to be signals from the victims, were caused by powder left in the mine being exploded by fire which is sweeping through it, according to Pete Akers, shaft boss.
