UIH MINERS ESCAPE TOIILSII ‘TREASON - CASES State Laws Provide They Must Be Released After Three Terms of Court. FOURTH DEFENDANT IS UP Operators Ar.xious to Get Something on Two Men Who Head 47,000. Hu C. C. LYOS Times Staff Correspondent CHARLESTOWN, W. Va., Sept. 7. Hundreds of West Virginia union coal miners, who are under indictment for ‘treason" in connection with their rmed march into Logan County last summer, are to go free. l.’nder the laws of West Virginia an indicted person must be tried within three terms of court after h.'s indictment has been returned. The third term will expire in 1 December. and up to tills time the operators have tried only three men: Bill Blizzard, acquitted of "treason.'' and the Rev. John Wilburn and h)S son. James, convicted of second-degree murder. The fourth trial, that of Walter Allen, for "treason,” is now on. It is expected the case will be drawn out for many weeks. After Keeney and Mooney The operators want to "get" Frank Keeney and Fred Mooney, president and secretary, respectively, of the West Virginia miners. These men are the brains of the union movement in the West Virginia coal fields. In the few years that they've been running things they’ve increased the union membership from <5.000 to 47,000. One of these two men probably can be tried before the court term closes in December. The statute of limitation will set the others free. Both are under indictment as being "accessories to the fact” in the murder of John Gore, non-union mine guard. PLATFORM IS ISSUED Socialists Make Public Declarations for Fall Campaign. By Cnited Press WASHINGTON, Sept. 7.—The Socialist party has just put out its platform for this year's congressional campaign. It is based on the statement that the country's employers are engaged in a great conspiracy to smash all unions and force the open shop system on workers. Public ownership of public utilities, including mines and railroads, minimum wages, a 44-hour week, taxation of uncultivated farm land, an antichild labor amendment to the constitution. annesty for so-called political prisoners, and complete freedom of speech and the press are other planks.

By United Press WASHINGTON, Sept. 7.—Senator Borah of Idaho, who is less of a party man than any Republican in the Senate. is, strangely enough, the most sought after Senator today by the Republican speakers’ bureau, and by individual Senators who want him to campaign for them. Borah has been appealed to by Frelinghuysen (New Jersev). Lodge (Massachusetts), and by friends of Poindexter (Washington). and other Senators, to stump their States for them. But most of ! those who want Borah's admittedly l effective aid as a speaker happen to have voted opposite him on important | issues. Borah has told them all. as j he had told the Republican speakers' | bureau in Chicago, that this year | he is going to make some speeches J in the West and wyi not commit him self now to any speaking program.
