RIGHMD SMITH, MANAGING EDITOR! OF HEW REAR Prominent Newspaper Man Passes Away Sunday at His Home Here. ILL FOR TEN YEARS Deceased Was Friend of Dela- j van Smith, News Owner, Who Died Last Week. Richard Smith, 63. managing editor of the Indianapolis News for more than twenty years, died at his home. 36 W. Thirteenth St., Sunday morning at 3 o'clock, after a lengthy illness. Ha had been in poor health for ten years, but had been active in managing the News until March of this year. Mr. Smith was not a kinsman of' Delavan Smith, owner of the News, who died last week, but they had been friends since youth. Both worked for the Associated Press as young men. and when Delavan Smith gained control of the News he made his friend managing editor. Richard Smith was born in Cincinnati, Aug. 14, 1859, the son of Richard Smith, Sr., editor of the Cincinnati Gazette. Asa boy he was a reporter on the Gazette. Traveled Widely In his young manhood Smith traveled widely through the then undeveloped Northwest and In Europe. Mr. Smith Is survived by his wife, Mrs. Caroline Tilden Smith, whom he married in Cleveland in October, ISS4. Other surviving relatives are his sisters, Mary and Laura Smith of Milford, Ohio, and Mrs. Henry Andrews of Toklo, Japan. Funeral services will be held at his home Tuesday afternoon at 4 o’clock. Burial will he made in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, Wednesday. Flags In all State parks will be flown at half-mast until sunset Wednesday in tribute to Mr. Smith’s memory, at the orders of Richard Lieber of the State department of conservation, who said that the deceased was a great friend of State park projects.
NEW CARLE ORGAN DEDICATED WITH FITTINESERIIICE Instrument, Which Cost $17,00C, Is Second Largest in State of Indiana. Several thousands persons were present yesterday for the dedication of the $17,000 pipe organ, the second largest of the State. MaJ. Earl F. Hites, pastor of the tabernacle, conducted the services, in which the Gypsy Smith choir assisted. Organ recitals and renditions of the choir, together with special sermon by Major Hites, marked the ceremony. Twelve Indianapolis mothers were called to tile rostrum and given an ovation by the choir and audience. The new organ occupies the rear center space behind the choir. By THE VISITOR An Impressive ceremony attended the dedication of the new Bchool building of St. Catherine Catholic Church yesterday. The opening of the new school marks an era of intensive work by Rev. Downey and his assistant, and devotion on the part of the congregation. A parade of the school children of the 225 families which are members of the church, formally opened the exercises yesterday afternoon. The religious services were held in the church. Then a procession of the Uniform Rank of the Knights of St. George, altar boys and clergy of the church formed, and marched to the school building. Each of the balloons will carry a waterproof bag containing instructions for the finder of the balloon. In each bag will be a telegraph blank addressed to the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce; also a map of the United States, Canada and Mexico. The finder will be instructed to send the telegram to the Chamber of Commerce, giving the exact place of landing and the hour. He also will be asked to mark the map with ink, showing as nearly as possible
