SM FAIRS IRE PROVING MERITS TO AOTODEALEB Manufacturers Agree That Industry Profits Even by County Fiestas. ADD NEW ATTRACTION Automobiles Enjoy Strong Attractiveness to Exposition Visitors. Automobile manufacturers are unanimous in their agreement that the State and County fairs which are now being held in every section of the United States, are of specific value to the automobile industry, especially from the viewpoint of the local automobile dealer. The idea of the State and County fair, although considerably older than the automobile Industry, has prospred and expanded into a really vital American institution since the first mechanically successful automobile, driven by Elwood Haynes, chugged its way along a country road in 1894. Having its inception, for the most part, in a week of fun and merrymaking, the State and county fairs have gradually developed into an educative stature, where the products of the particular state or county are exhibited and explained to the thousands of visitors. With the advent of the automobile, anew attraction was added, and today finds the automobile exhibition one of the strongest and most interesting of the features of every fair. The farmers, for the most part, have harvested their crops and are it* a position to buy, and a great many other prospective customers are obtained by the dealer during fair week, who eventually become car owners. OIL INDUSTRIES REPORT SCANT PROEM 111 Balance Sheets Show Earning Only 4.4 Per Cent During Last Year. ■ DUE TO SALES PRESSURE Obligation to Sell Products at Close Margin Is Held Responsibility. Since November, 1920, the refining branch of the oil industry has been conducted at a loss, according to evidence submitted to the Senate committee on manufactures, which is investigating tho oil business. The industry as a whole—producers, refiners transporters and jobbers—made an average net profit in 1921 of a little more than 4 per cent. The computation was based on the available balance sheets of oil companies representing all branches of the industry, recently made by the American Petroleum Institute. It shows that last year these com-, panies earned $156,815,711 on a total net worth of $3,551,170,000, or 4.4 per cent. The unfavorable showing of the refining companies, according to the In- j stitute's report, was due to the fact that products of crude petroleum other than gasoline, namely, fuel and gas oils, kerosene, lubricating oils, j etc., which amount to about 75 per cent of the total products of crude, had to be sold at prices which did not represent a fair share of the cost of production. ; Church Gives Parking Space St. James’ Church of Evansburg, Pa., has parking space for 800 automobiles.
