"1 believe that Indianapolis is doing equally as well as any city in the Middle West in regard to boulevard construction and park beautification,” said R. Walter Jarvis, superintendent of public parks, today. Mr. Jarvis has Just recently returned from a session of the American Conference of park executives, held in Minneapolis The conference adopted a resolution for the establishment of a rose garden in every public park. Hueston Toll has put in a large garden of roses In Garfield Park. Mr. Jarvis said that he was heartily in favor of the mayor’s and park board's plan for a suitable artificial lake. CONFERENCE OPENS Church of United Brethren in Session Here. More than 300 delegates to the sev-enty-seventh annual White River Conference of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ opened a week's session in Indiana Central Coljege at University Heights. Bishop H. H. Fout of Indianapolis delivered an address. The Rev. J. E. Shannon will deliver an address tonight on “Evangelism.”

Sixty Per Cent of Engines Found Defective in Government Inquiry
~Bp United Press WASHINGTON, Aug. 30.—Reports to the Interstate Commerce Commission Indicate that sixty per cent of the Nation’s locomotives have been rendered defective as the result of the shopmen's strike. This was revealed in a special report to the Senate by the Interstate Commerce Commission on the deterioration of rail equipment. Ratio Applies Generally Os 4.085 locomotives inspected at 717 different points, 2,456 or approximately 60 per cent of the engines were found defective and the commission expressed the opinion that this ratio would apply to all the 70,000 locomotives in the country. The report was in response to a senatorial resolution, recently passed. Notices were served upon the carriers operating unsafe locomotives that they were violating the InterState Commerce act and demanded MRS. GREENOUGH DEAD Well Known Lady Passes Away at liOs Angeles, News of the death Monday night in Los Angeles, Cal., of Mrs. Alice L. Greenough. mother of Walter S. Greenough of this city, has been received here. Death occurred at the home of her son. G. K. Greenough. 1 Funeral announcements have not been made. Mrs. Greenough was a resident of Brazil and Indianapolis for a number of years. She was the widow of the late Charles B. Greenough.

Committeemen Are in Line. “All the precinct commiteemen have fallen into line,” William H. Freeman, Republican county chairman, said today. A special meeting of the county advisory committee was held last night to discuss, among other things, precinct committeemen who were attempting to carry primary fights into the fall election. The Armitage situation was not mentioned. Freeman said.

It was Indicated that no Immediate move on the part of this Government is contemplated, but that eventually a way will be found by which the United States can aid in relieving the situation. FIFTY CLOWNS IN SHOW Wild Animal Circus Here Monday for Two Performances. Fifty clowns will frolic under the big “top” of the A1 G. Barnes wild animal circus here Monday. It will be one of the attractions bidding for favor on Labor Day in the city.
