BANKERS WITCH GERMAN MARKS WITH ANXIETY Gathering Clouds in Europe Have Large Significance in This Country. By United \ etc* NEW YORK, Aug. 30. —Wall Street bankers with heavy international financial interests are anxiously watching the gathering clouds in Europe. Warnings by Col. E. M. House, James M. Cox and other observers, that Europe may be approaching upheaval like that of 1914 are leading to consideration of the far-reaching effects such a convulsion ; would have on the United States. But bankers here are not worried about one thing—the effect of a European crash on payment of $10,000,000,000 debt of the allies. Bankers who have made a life study of international j finance long ago gave up hope of ever collecting the allied war debt, and are convinced that sooner or later the American Government must realize this. One hint of what would happen was shown when the German mark fell to 2,000 to the dollar. German manufacturers were practically forced to stop buying American cotton. The situation of one German concern was cited as typical. When marks were worth 200 to the dollar, this firm placed credits of 12,000,000 marks, at that time the equivalent of $60,000 with an American cotton exporter. Then the mark dropped to 600 and thj German firm’s credit shrank to $20,000. With the drop to ! 2,000, this firm’s original credit, amounted to only $5,000. This is the experience of all German concerns seeking to buy raw materials in the United States. Germany bought j one-quarter of the American cotton rrop last year and the loss of such a market not only for this staple but V>r many others is bound to have a serious effect on business conditions V.Y the United States. Financiers here are as much at a 1 loss for a remedy as European states-. men. LUTHERANS PLAN TO EXTEND CHURCH Nation-Wide Building Program Outlined at Meeting of Pastors and Laymen. By United Press DETROIT, Mich., Aug. 30.—Sev-enty-five pastors and 1.000 laymen representing Lutheran churches from all parts of the United States adopted resolutions at the Lutheran synod here for extensive nation-wide building operations to increase the scope of Lutheran religious and education work in America. Dr. C. H. L. Schuette. Columbus. Ohio, president and Rev. M. P. F. Doermann, Blue Island, 111., conducted meetings during the convention.
